I collected an '01 Trophy 1200 and took it stright onto the motorway. I was very disturbed by the amount of front wheel weaving at only 70mph - especially in the wake of a lorry (not wobble, only weave).

In the week before I had riden 600 & 750 bikes with mini-fairings or naked and (other than wind buffeting) felt very stable on them.

Is this to be expected on this bike> Is it a feature of riding with the luggage in place?

They do tend to move around a little in the wind and tractor trailers can add to the fun. My Magna sits like a rock in most traffic wind conditions but it has no fairing and I have always assumed the Trophy fairing size caused the wind deflection movements of the bike. :???:

not sure if this applies to you, but my '02 is pretty sensetive to front tire wear and pressure. I found with the original BT54's that even a few pounds low would make a differance. The Dunlop I have on now isn't too bad but I get alot of vibration from it due to cupping. I 'll be replacing it soon with an Avon to match the rear.

Also chain and wheel alignmnt can cause a weave. I've found my Trophy to be pretty stable, other than cross winds hitting the full windshield and fairing.

I've found the same applies to mine as far as tire pressure. Do you know if the former owner ever changed any suspension settings? Some people actually lower their rear suspensions and don't lower the front which would make it "pointier". You do have suspension adjusters (aside from the bike being physically lowered) that you might want to set to the medium setting and then adjust to your liking from there.

Plus, there is a direct correlation between which windscreen I'm using on major highways such as you describe.

With the lower, sport windscreen, I have virtually NO problem except the typical buffeting you'd get from riding at spped on a bike with no screen at all.

The taller the screen, the more it acts like a "sail" and the higher the "pull" on the bike since it's higher up above the bars.

I don't think the luggage is the cause BUT, Trophys are sensitive to the amount and the distribution of the weight inside them. Always try to pack the panniers as even as possible (by weight). And the more weight you have in the top box, the more top-heavy the bike's going to feel as well as "lifting" the front suspension making it "pointier". I've known people to lose panniers (or even break their luggage racks off) from overpacking them too.... so follow the suggested weight limits.

Seeker, what "sport windsield" do you have? is it one you bought or did you cut down a stocker?

I'd like to have a short windshield for the summer and go back to stock or taller for he winter.

I think for the most part you guys are right. Tire pressure/cupping is a prime concern for any larger bike. Also when I bought my 98 I found a vague front end. When pulled apart to look at/change springs I found that there was an insufficient amount of oil (about 1/2) and one spring was upside down! Not sure who did it (factory or PO) because I have no maintenance history on it. Put 10w in and turned the spring around and now it is better. I recommend you check those first as they are just maintenance items gone awry.

Time for new rubber for me though, I will change from the Bridgestones ( They suck) most likely to Pilot Roads or Avons. Loved the Pilot Roads on my Guzzi.

The shorty windscreen was made by clearview, but I don't think they carry them anymore.

I have a Visual screen (http://www.bikescreens.com) on my '01 and noticed the same thing. Seems to me the stock Trophy screen causes most of the problem. Not only did installing the shorter screen make the bike track better in wind and traffic, it also eliminated the turbulence and lowered the noise level considerably.
