A Starting Problem

Hello from another newcomer to Triumph Rat.

I recently took ownership of a 62K ’94 Trophy; purchased as a winter bike, to save the usual mount, an ageing Beemer, from further corroding through another salty UK winter.
The Trophy is a surprisingly good ride for its age and a great deal slimmer than the BM when negotiating rush hour jams. But of course with all the upside there is the downside.
I believe I have the classic Triumph alternator problem (diesel rattle). This is fairly well documented, Jack Lilley can supply the kit for a price and a day in the garage to repair should quieten everything down.

But, this evening having stopped for fuel, upon hitting the starter the bike started no problem, once the gearbox was moved from neutral to first; the engine stopped immediately. This happened 6 times ( you have to experiment to understand the problem, especially when wet, slightly cold and ever so slightly irritated with the joker in the 4X4 awaiting his turn at the pump behind you).
Having sussed this was a no go situation, I paddled the bike forward about 6 inches, started selected first, situation normal now, and rode away.
Does anyone have any clues as to the problem?

Regards

Sienna

Apologies for the delay with an answer to the problem. It was as suggested ; a sticking side stand switch. Corrosion on the switch pin prevented free movement of the contacts. WD 40 and emery paper has solved the issue.

Thanks again for the comments,

Sienna
