I posted earlier a point that my '99 Trophy clunks like crazy as I move up and down the gears. There is the odd time where it is smooth which tells me that it does not have to be that noisy. It seems worse after the bike has heated up a bit and I was wondering if any of you guys know how this can be handled. I would appreciate any help on this as I think I am going to have to buy ear plugs next just to hide the noise.

Just for informational and diagnostic purposes....

When was the last time the oil was changed?

Do you know what type of oil was used?

Are you using a straight synthetic oil?

Have you tried bleeding the hydralic clutch and making sure it's disengaging completely?

Same answer
The quality of oil has a great effect on noises and gear shifting

My 92 900 has a very slight leak on the hydraulic clutch at the bottom where it fits on the engine. There is something like a brake set up with a piston and seal, so I am told. Most of the time it not a problem, but when the engine gets hot it’s stiff and clunks like mad. As the engine cools changes are much smoother. Yes, I have had this down twice in the past year but it continues to leak. Check your clutch for leaks at this seal.
Steve.

The area you describe that is leaking is akin to the "slave cylinder" used on many cars with hydraulic clutches. It works pretty much the same as a brake master cylinder...with a plunger that converts the mechanical movement into hydraulic movement (or back into mechanical).

The plunger has ring-like seals to seal it to the cylinder walls like rings on a engine's pistons. If the cylinder walls get scored or the seals break down and leak, you are not getting full movement in whatever it is making work.

I'm not sure if you can get rebuild kits to replace the seals on Triumph clutch cylinders or not. More than likely, they just force you to buy a new slave cylinder...but you could check and see.

If the seals are standard size 0 rings just about any good auto parts shop or garage should have a selection. If you can match up the 0 rings you can save a few quid instead of getting a complete rebuild kit or new cyclnder
