Hi guys not long bought my oo 1200 trophy Went for 1st big ride Did about 120miles on 1st tank thought to my self this isnt good All up over three days did aprox 900 miles got about 30mph Been doing some home work from what ive been told should get about 200miles not sure if thats counting the RES Wat I did was when I got home I turned the bike of ( dont start it again as this will soot up the plugs)
Then I pulled the plugs out (when they had cooled down)This gives you a true colour of the plugs, Mine were black & sooted up ,Checked with my brother who is a macanic same conclusion as me bike running to rich ,Will now pull the carbs out & check the float levels & slide settings, Also will clean carbs, Went to pull out the air filter,Bad design,Air filters are ment to be easy to get at ???,Will keep you posted on the mpg when all done, Does any one know the factory write up on the mpg what do thew say ???

Hi djlnz, I would expect 50-55mpg depending on your riding style. If you're over 50k check the throttle needles for wear. If worn the emulsion tubes will need replacing and quite likely the slides are worn oval at the needle hole in the base of the slide. Go for DynoJet kits as replacement and std slides. The air filter cannot be removed without first removing the carbs. Remove the throttle cable at the handle bar and the choke at the carbs when removing the carbs.
Air filter may simply need replacing (good time to fit K&N and rejet?), but worth cleaning the carbs and measuring the float levels while they're out. The best method for float level checks is the tube attached to the float bowl drain, with the level ideally set at the bowl gasket joint. Spec is 1.5mm +/- as opposed to physical measurement of the float with a ruler. Relace the o ring that seals the throttle slide block to the emulsion opening, mixture leaking here bypasses the metering of the needle.
Idle mixture should be checked, only has a minor effect past one eighth throttle opening, though thats not far from 110kph cruising on your machine!
A look at the shims if not done in the last 10-20,000km would be worth a check? Tight inlets cause seat leakage and in turn increases fuel usage.
A cylinder leakdown test will expose any valve or ring issue. Just while you've got the plugs out.
A check of these basics starting with the easiest should pin-point the cause.
Cheers Kerry

Does it run smoothly at all rpm`s?
It might be a coil problem, a common failure I think.

I'd have to agree with the previous comment. Due to the frequency of coil problems on the Trophy, that may be your culprit.
During my fight with a bad coil, my bike would only get mpg in the 20s. As soon as I replaced the*****, the bike jumped up to approximately 35-45 mpg.

I usually get 35-40 mpg on my 1200. My mileage dropped to 30 mpg and I also changed the plugs, sync the carbs, and ran some carb cleaner through it at the next fill up. My mileage was back up to 38mpg this last tank full.

Rode this weekend with the Avons (42psi rear/40psi front) recent valve adj, carb sync, plugs, and air filter cleaning. Ran backroads and superslab. Over 340 miles she averaged almost 42MPGs. We were playing a bit on the backroads and ran 80-85 mph on the 4 lane roads.
The guy with me was on a Concours and the only time we did anything differently was when I turned around to check out a sign while he waited at an intersection. But our odos read him travelling 1 mile more than I did when we stopped for lunch(at the 137 mile mark). He ended up with 45MPG's(I think) not bad when you consider the Concours has a 7.5 gallon tank.
