Hi guys,
I just came accross a '96 Trophy triple with 15000 miles for sale and it really peaked my interest but I know nothing about those so I hope somebody here might help me.
First, the bike has saddlebags, a few scratches, a new battery and needs a new front tire. They are asking 2600$.
Does that sound like a decent price?
Second, what should I look for? What are the common problems associated with this bike? I think the triples are supposed to be pretty reliable but what about the rest of the bike?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel.

Sounds like a good price to me Daniel. If you want it, I would say go for it. See if you can get him to cover the new front tire.

As far as common problems, there aren't many that I know of. I have read on here about problems with the alternator bolts on older Triumphs. I searched for a post about them, but couldn't find anything specific.

That Trophy will probably be ready for a new chain as the original Reginas last about 15k. Check the rear brake pads also as they have a short life relative to the fronts.

My ' Rule of thumb ' is to make sure I have enough money left, after the purchase of a bike, to deal with any problems that may crop up later.
Having said that, I hadn't anticipated having to source a second hand engine  . Don't let that put you off. Mine's a four and I got shafted by a dealer. Doh ! I had a Thunderbird triple and the engine can't be beaten for character. I say ' go for it ', you know you want to.

Out side of coil replacements every so often my T3 has been a real trooper - 100K+ miles......

Thanks guys,
I noticed the chain too. Forgot to mention it.
I'm a little concerned about maintenance costs with this bike, I'm supposed to go back tonight for a test ride...
From what I read it seems that electrical issues are the main concern with the Trophy, is that correct?

If you read this forum, and look at all the treads with electrical problems, stuttering and stumbling, you might think tis is a bike with serious problems. I don't think this is the reality, of course there are some problems here and there, but not more than other bikes. You see a lot of these things in the forum, because it would be dull to wright: well, my bike ran absolutely perfect yesterday, anyone noticed the same lately?

If you think the price is reasonable, and you like the bike, go for it. You will have many miles of pure fun, and maybe some small problems, like I`ve had with both my bikes, regardless of brand.

Well, the bike turns out to be a total POS...
It's hard to believe that somebody could mess up a bike that much in only 15000 miles.

Thanks everybody for your help, I'll keep looking.

I think I can speak for us all, when I say...good luck!.

As you can tell, we love our Trophy's.
I think everyone here will agree that 99% of us are NOT the (If it ain't a Triumph...It ain't s--- ) type of motorcycle rider.
The few faults the Trophy has are here to be seen by all.

We hope you find your new girl. It's the right time of year to shop.

Cheers,
Tom.
