I thoguth everything was in good order once I replaced the coils however on the ride home yesterday the oil light stayed on.

Checked the oil level and everything seemed OK so made the ride home. Upon getting home I pulled the wire from the sending unit and the light stayed on. Checked the sending unit and it showed closed with engine off and open when on so the sending unit is working and oil presure is there.

Anyone come across this and possibly know where a possible short to ground may occur along the backbone or in the gauge area?

May tear into it next week however will be riding this weekend.

Could you run a test lamp from the switch to the battery (or any hot lead) and see if it goes out when running?? Next step is to change the switch (sorry, sending unit) and re-test it with the test lamp.

Just the rambling musings of the village idiot: Jim

Jim, The sending unit/switch is OK. With an ohm meter in shorts when engine is off and open when engine is running. Even if the wire is pulled from the switch the light remains on.

The white/red wire must be shorted to ground after the light but before the oil sending unit/switch.

Guess I'll have to pull the tank and side panels to trace it out.

At least that's good news, as you've not lost oil pressure. Better the tank and wiring than the engine.

Good Luck, hope it's an easy one; Jim

Found a short in the harness near the back of the tank and frame backbone. Have moved the harness and that solved it for now. Will take the tank off in a few weeks and address.
