I'm posting this for a friend of mine who rides a 95 Trophy, we started troubleshooting this as a fuel problem, now we think it is a n electrical problem, anyone with previous expiernece of this?

-----------------------------

On my way home from work. MY 95 900 trophy lost power.

As if the key was turned off. Still had lights. Still turned over but no ignition.
After 30 minutes she fired right up. Ran for ten...died. Fired up again after 30 minutes same thing over again till I got home.

Removed the tank. Had it professionally derusted and cleaned. Replaced it and it still does the same thing? Runs great for ten minutes even when I hold the petcock on Prime. Gas present in carb bowls.....Could it be electrical?

Thanks for the help.

HP,

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor is shorting out. Runs fine when the engine is cold, but quits when the engine warms up. I haven't had this problem yet myself, but lots of post's here on this topic. Seems like most Trophy's will have this prob eventually. I need to get one myself and throw it in my kit just in case. Hope this helps.

Happy Trails,
ervdrvr1

This a reponse from a contributor of the TriumpmTalk forum.Seem pretty good to me, what do you guys think, it also agrees with ervdrvr1, thanks.

Your Trophy is displaying the classic symptoms of a crankshaft position sensor / pickup coil gone bad (Triumph part # T1290022 / price around $67-68.00 USD)

It will fire-up and run until it gets hot and then no-go.

Once it cools down, it fires up again and runs until hot.

Place bike on sidestand (NOT the centre stand) so that expensive synthetic oil won't run out on the floor.

Remove the right side fairing.

Remove the round crankshaft side cover from the lower engine (7 , 8mm nuts)

You'll see a wire entering from the rear going to a small plastic module...remove the module.

Replace the module with a new one.

The hardest part is tracking the wire back to the plug since it's wire-tied to the frame.

Once replaced, you'll be good again for thousands of miles.

Just be careful that you don't damage the gasket under the cover so you can reuse it which normally isn't a problem doing.

When replacing the sensor (2 - T30 Torx) you'll need to set the air gap between it and the crankshaft at it's closest point to a range between 0.6 and 0.8 mm. I recommend about halfway between those numbers to allow for expansion and contraction.

If you want to CHECK if it's bad first, disconnect it at it's plug and use an ohmeter between the two leads...it should be 530 ohms plus or minus 10%.

But trust me, it's gone bad for sure!

Without a doubt it's the crank position sensor. I've gone through 3 of these in 90,000+ miles. The first one lasted approx. 33,000 miles, the second one lasted approx.40,000 miles and the last one gave out at only 8,000 miles.

The conditions, when my sensors went bad, were identical to your description.

I ride a '98 Sprint 900, same engine as your friends Trophy 900. Buy 2 sensors, keep one as a spare.

I'm having a side stand relay issue and while reading through the service manual I came upon the "pick-up sensor". This thing, in conjunction with the igniter, replaces the usual distributor in most set-ups.
Does anyone know where the side-stand relay on an '01 trophy 900 is?

Should be on the sidestand bracket, makes contact with the sidestand.

I think you mean the sidestand "switch". A double length of wire goes from the switch and plugs into the wiring harness.

Is this a 900 problem or should I get an extra for my 1200 just in case? Would hate to be far from home and have this issue and no cure.

Thanks

Hello,

VeedonFleece :
Here, you will find a step by step procedure to change it.

That Daytona 900 was also suffering from the same typical symptom.

This page could be also of some help

http://www.triumph-t3-passion.info/m...riumph-t3.html

You can also throw a glance to a T3/T4 help file to identify the troubleshooting, using the lexical page and both the internal links and hyperlinks.

Hope it will be of some help.
