After owning my Trident for four months I have fell in love with Triumphs. With that said, I have been using it to go back in forth to work (140 mile round trip) on the super slab and now am looking at something a little more suitable.

I was looking at selling the Trident and purchasing a 96 or later Trophy 1200. Can you guys tell me what I should be looking for in these models? What kind of MPG could I expect? How well do the factory bags work? Any advice would greatly help! Thanks!

I have a 98 1200. The bags work great, but leak if the rain is intense. The Triumph trunk has never leaked on me though.

Interstate travel at posted speed you can look at 40 to 45MPGs. City is more like 30 to 35.

When commuting I average 40MPGs. But I exceed the speed limit from time to time. The bike is just more comfortable traveling over 80. :-D

Don't think I could add anymore than that. Trophy1298 pretty much covered it.

Thanks for the responses guys, I have been reading a bunch of everyones posts on this site trying to find out as much info as possible. At 6'1" and 280 how to you think the wind shield will work? Does this bike get pushed around any more than a Trident does?

Love the Trident, would like a bit more wind protection, and storage for gear. Would not mind taking a few trips (vacations). Currently make it down to the Dragon every year with the Hellcat (trailor it down). Would not mind making the trip on bikes...

I wish I could get 40-45 mpg........never had it happen.....If I run on the slab at 70-75 mph, I'll get 30-34 mpg if I run 80-95 mph It could drop to below 30. I think the bike drinks gas to be honest. I road like a fool out side of Hot Springs Ark. doing 80-130 mph with a local on a BMW 1150 and I swear I watched the gas gauge go down as I road.
The windshield is another interesting issue. I am 6'3" and own a Lg Clearview which great in the winter but I think the aerodynamics is bad on the road. I like the the stock much better as long as temperatures permit.
At 280 I am sure you will want a new seat. Keeping the "boys" out of the tank is tough on a stock seat.
Just one man's opinion for what its worth.
Great bike..........

I agree with Tooth, my mpg is 35-39 for normal riding. I am 6' and 245lbs. The stock windshield is okay, but I get a little buffeting across the top of my helmet. I have thought about a "Laminar Lip", but have not gotten around to it.
The stock seat drives the "boys" right into the tank, so a new seat will be in your future. There are a lot threads on that subject.
Another thing to consider is tire wear. I am about to replace my Avons after only 8000 miles. Bridgestones got 10k.
The coils fail and give bizzar symptoms. Most of us has had to replace ours. That seems to be the most common failure of all maintenance issues.

So is it the weight and height that make the difference? I'm 5'11" and 170lbs. I normally get 200 to 220 miles b4 going to reserve. When I immediately stop for fuel it takes 5 gallons(US). Mine is a 1998, wonder if the changes in 1999 made a difference in aerodynamics that accounts for some of the difference?

They are right about the seat issue. I once cleaned the seat up and shined it a bit too good... big freakin' mistake. :wow: One that will never be made again. Other than that, I tried a Corbin and actually liked the stock better. I am also running the stock screen.

I find that temperature plays a huge part in my milage. As much if not more than my speed, within limits.

I do find that this bike, 1996 1200, gets pushed around more in the wind than any other bike I have owned and this also costs a few mpg.
