Find a tire that fits your riding style. I'm on my second set up D220's before that the bike came with Bridgestones. The BT020s were too hard and I felt every single crack and imperfection on the road, and the wet traction was pretty scary.
I come from the school of changing the tires out once a season, more if needed. Front tire wear can be deceiving, 6000 miles is 6000 miles and the front gets just as much abuse from diving in and out of corners as the back... I always change out both tires at once.
Watch who you talk to about tires, most sport bike guys do track days and will recommend tires that know to be great on the track, a dry track and not the street.
Read, read, read and talk to different riders.
Dunlop
Metzler
Michelin
Avon
Pirelli

My rear bridgestone is done with a little over 8000 miles. I do a lot of two up riding and we are not little people.
For what it's worth, I have a buddy that does 15-20,000 miles per year on his FJR, He has run the Avon AV 45-46 and is getting 12,000 plus. The FJR bunch that he belongs to, for the most part all like the Avons.
Since these folks think nothing of 1000-1500 miles to do lunch,
I tend to trust their choices.
My buddy's name is Rick Martin, Wish him well in this years IronButt.
No matter where you go..........There you are.

I'll be looking to replace both tyres on my 900 pretty soon.
All of my trophy riding is done two up, our combined weight is about 280lbs, so i'm looking for a long life tire as oposed to out and out grip, the Avons keep coming up so I might try them.
Apart from 12004, anyone else do a lot of two up riding, especially on the 900.

I've now got 10k+ miles on the rear Avon and it's barely starting to square off, I'd estimate another 5k till it's at the wear bars. I don't do much two-up riding, but I'm heavy enough for two people and I don't baby the bike. I do keep a close track on the tire pressures though and run 42psi year round.
I've found the Avon doesn't stick as well in the wet as the Dunlop, but it appears to last almost three times as long and for any normal speed riding in the rain it sticks just fine. I have the front on there now and as a set they work very well. I plan on sticking with them. :-D
