My main riding area is in the Appalachian mountains and the higher gearing of the Trophy 1200 means frequent downchanging so I am considering changing the 18 tooth front spocket to the 17 tooth used on the Trophy 900. Anyone with this experience on this type of combination ? Thanks

Hi Netmaker

I (TrophyBoy) just select a lower gear, we have six to choose from.

You mean there are 5 other lower gears ? Less teeth on the front sprocket means roll obn acceleration improvement, with a simple twist of the throttle, and since the bike is good for 140mph +, on the motorways in Europe, and with the ridiculous 75 mph limits in this country the high speed cruising potential is lost, so a smaller front sprocket increases the engines flexibility, and thus top gear roll on acceleration performance, at that low 75mph to 85 mph cruising speed that is forced on us by the legislators who drive around in cages.

I found that in the twisties 17/43 left me wanting the power elsewhere, so I went 18/43 and found I could hold 1st just a bit longer -2nd as well. Thats with a 108 ponied S3 that's very responsive and lighter than your 1200 Trophy. So yours being a Torque monster, dropping a tooth and short shifting might be the way - mpg will change for the worse but your fun factor will go up and maybe tire life will go down. The gear ratios are the same throughout the range, maybe you'll be lifting the front at 8500 coming hard out of a bend, that should be a hoot with paniers and the Missus aboard yeehaa!!!! Share & Enjoy! :horns:

Missus ? why would I want to share the fun ? and that is just more weight to carry and manage in the twisities. I have previously changed the Honda V4 750cc Magna from 16 to 15 front sprocket and that really made the bike respond to a twist of the throttle without the need to downshift so I anticipate the 1200 cc motor will be just as responsive even when carrying more weight like a missus. Maybe I will have to invest in a passenger backrest in case one of the fairer sex are vibrated off the back of a V-twin and I have the opportunity to offer a ride on a real accelerating bike.
