throttle lock/cruise control

Anyone using any kind of cruise control or simple throttle lock on your Trophy. I currently use a Throttle Rocker which is far from the solution but nonetheless a help on the throttle hand when running far. I am looking at my third Florida journey and I would appreciate any responses so rolling down South will be a bit easier on the hands. Does Triumph or anyone else offer this?
Finally, I appreciate the responses on my previous postings. This site was the reason my bike is finally rolling flawlessly again after the fuel starvation issues. It is a helluva resource.

Hi Freddy,
I'm using the Vista Cruise Control on mine, mainly because it's simple, mounts on easily and works with my heated grips. Costs around $30 and I only had to move my front brake/master cyl. in abour 1/4 inch to do the job. The universal model is what I have, although there may be a specific model available now, but I can't see the need for one. It took about 1/2 hour to do the job and it's been a god-send on the highway.

Hope this helps: Jim

I use the saem sort of throttle lock that was widely used by Kawi Concours owners. It's a rubber o'ring, about 28mm dia. x 3mm dia cross-section (I think), You leave it on the bar end weight and when you want to lock the throtle you roll it into the space between the weight and the grip. It kind of sits there and provides just enough grip on the throttle to keep it from rotating, but not enough that you can't turn the throttle back and forth easily. When you want to unlock the throttle, just slide the o-ring back onto the bar end weight with the heel of your hand.
The Concours guys favored one that was a Catepiller hydraulics part, which is Cat yellow. I pilfered mine from the maintenance dep't at work but it would probably cost about $,39 at a well-stocked hardware store.

I used the CAT o-ring last year on a longer ride on my Hayabusa, and didn't like it. It never would keep the throttle open, just slowed down the return. Oh well, for the low cost, it was worth it to see. I like the Throttlemeister design, but at over $100, its expensive. I have thought about getting one as everyone I know who has it, loves it. Still for that money I could get a few other things too. I'll probably go for the Vista Cruise in a week or 2 after I pick up my new-to-me bike. (Bet ya can't guess what I'm getting considering where I'm posting, can ya :-D )

My 95 had a throttle lock on it when I bought it, so I don't know much about it. On my 2003, however, there appears to be a small, rectangular plate right where it would've been on my 95. Kinda makes me wonder if it was intended for a throttle lock.

gararnett,
Let me know how it works. I was leaning towards the Vista Cruise but ran into a rider with a Throttlemeister on his Sprint and between the ease and the effectiveness it is quite a setup. Cost is high, however. Have to get one soon, my long summer journey is coming up.
good riding,

The NEP came in Friday, and I have not installed it yet. I got an e-mail from someone who installed the std. Vista Cruise, not the universal, and said they cut off the tabs, such that it doesn't matter if you get a single cable or dual cable model. the NEP is made very similar to the standard Vista, so I'm trying to see how it was modified to work. As it is, the NEP will not work (I have the dual cable model, as I screwed up in ordering, but I don't think the dual model would work either with out modofocation as the tabs are just too high to work on the throttle housing. So, since the Vista std. and NEP are similar, I wanna see how the Vista was modded to work. If I can do the same with the NEP, that will great. Hoping to get the info soon as I'm hoping to make a long ride either this coming weekend or the next.

I will post results. Just don't really have any yet.

I had a Vista Cruise on my bike when I got it and it worked great. HOWEVER, I just put heated hand grips on and the Vista Cruiser does not have the room anymore. Aside from the Throtlemister, anything else out there work?

Hi Iridehorses,
I've got the heated grips on the '02 and there was just enough room to install the Vista by moving the brake lever/mc assembly in just about 1/4 of an inch or so. Only difference that might be is that mine is one of the "after" serial # bikes. There is a different part # for the later '02's. I did have to turn the unit so that the locking lever is facing right at me, but that's the only thing I ran into during the installation.

Hope this helps: Jim

Jim,

When I reinstalled the right side housing, there is a little "dimple" on the handle bar inside the housing that the outside half of the housing fits into so that it locks the housing in it's proper place.

Did you put a new dimple in the handlebar? Without it the housing will not go back on correctly. (my bike is one of the "after" as well - 88635).

Hi Bill, I only loosened mine up and slid it in I don't think that there's a dimple on mine. When I referred to the "after" VIN it was for the 2002 model, or at least that was what I thought. The heated grips were different from the '01 model (or so I was told). If mine has a dimple, it hasn't made any difference to me in use, as tightening up the screws did the trick. I'm assuming (dangerous word) that the dimple is an indentation in the handlebar. Maybe they did away with it on the '02 model.

Anybody out there know for sure? Jim

Just a quick update. I ended up purchasing the Throttlemeister and am very happy with the results and quality. In addition, I purchased the slightly heavier and longer version so the slight vibration at higher speeds is reduced.
With the Trottlemeister, Gen Mar risers and Airhawk seat cushion my summer cruise down south and wherever else the spirit moves me should be a bit more comfortable.
Ready to roll,
MilwFreddy

After reading the suggestions on this site I decided to bite the bullet and order a "Throttlemeister". By searching the web I was able to find one for about a hundred dollars (after watching a used one go for almost that much on e-bay). Installation was relatively simple and they come with a matching weight for the left side. They look very clean and work well. A little more expensive but it really kept the look of the original setup.
