Hi! Buying me my first Triumph (new). 2001 Trophy 900
or 2003 Tiger! Price =very close.
I'm a veteran rider, but find it hard to choose.
I'll use the bike for everything. Having said that, it should be the Tiger. But man, the weather protection of the Trophy is godsend. Both have bags, same price.
My concern w the Trophy: older type motor; depreciation.
Your thoughts highly appreciated.

I was in the same boat, I couldn't decide between a new 1200 Trophy, a Thunderbird Sport or a Tiger, the TBS and the Tiger were cheaper but what finaly sold it was the weather protection so I got the Trophy. So far it's been a great bike so I'm pretty happy with my choice.
Next time I can afford a new bike I'll try'n find a TBS, but the Tigers are cool too. :-g :-g

Yeah, it's kinda hard to recommend one over the other. I too love the weather protection of the Trophy. Never having ridden the Tiger though, I couldn't give you an intelligent ( at least for me ) answer. As far as concerns about the older T3 and T4 motors, that shouldn't be a concern. They are way over engineered and almost bullet proof. In regards to depreciation, that's going to happen no matter what you buy. The only thing I can tell you is to try them both, think really hard about your riding style and how you plan to ride the most and go from there. Hey, they are both Triumphs, how can you go wrong? :-D

I'm thinking about getting a 900 Trophy, purely for touring two up.
I'll still keep my tiger absolutely fantastic bike after all the mod's I've done to it, doesn't half surprise a few squids.
Don't know a thing about the Trophy, so really looking for a bit of advice.
I'm going to discount the 1200, purely for economy reasons. Plus I love the tripple.
Anything to look out for, mechanically, what's better carb' or FI,
Any and all advice, info', much appreciated.

I think there is really no difference in value on a used Trophy. The 96-2001 bikes can all be had for around $5-6K. Just bought a 98 1200 that is sweet, but some prefer the extra smoothness of the triple. I preferred the gittyup of the extra jug. A Triple is like having a girl with three jugs. The 1200 is like twins! (No offense intended to our feminine Riders)
This is one of the funnest rides I have owned that actually has good utility as well. My only complaint is that the Trophy is topheavy, making it a handful in very low speed manuevers.
If I could figure a way to add an electric Windhield, this would be perfect. Oh and an increase the lousy Gas Mileage would be nice.

That was my point, not the cost of the bike. I also prefer the flexibility of the triple engine not the gear box, although they are both intrinsicaly linked.
If the Trophy is like the Tiger, stick it in top and go all day, rather than have to constantly hunt up and down the box, then that is what I'm looking for.

re; lousy gas mileage and low speed top heavy issue. Economy = My dealership maintains the 2001 Trophy 1200 has listed options for sprocket gearing and they claim the parts manual lists 18 primary and 44 rear ( 2.44 to 1 ) as standard sprockets but when I checked mine I found the previous owner has installed the option of 19 primary and 40 rear ( 2.10 to 1) and gas mileage seems fair for a 1200 motor, at around 45 mpg for my mountain area riding . With the 6 speed box mated to that high final drive gearing, and the high torque output of the 1200 motor, it delivers good all round performance. The dealership maintains the primary sprocket options are 17,18 & 19 and the rear 40 to 48 teeth ?
Top heavy = drop the bike an inch and that low speed top heavy feeling just goes away.

Having an '02 Tiger and having a '00 trophy in for a repaint, I wouldn't trade my tiger for two trophy's. Once you have fuel injection and the triple motor you won't go back to four cylinders and carbs.
I also think the trophy is a great touring bike if that is all you want to do. The storage and smoothness is wonderful. But, The tiger is more fun. Heck run off the road, just keep going. Maybe it is a mental thing, but the tiger is very comfortable on or off the road.
I dislike the brakes on the trophy. I find the bike will allow you to ride it hard and fast, but if you need to stop quickly, the front brakes fade way too quick. Its then you realize how heavy the trophy really is. Perhaps some racing brake pad would help. It would be my first upgrade.
YMMV
