'01 trophy 1200 jumps in 4th gear???
Hi all, and thanks in advance for any input you may have! I've got an '01 trophy 1200 with 26,xxx miles on her. I noticed the last time that I had her out it was jumping in gear a little as I accelerated. It's been a while since then. I just put a new rear tire(road smart) on her. I also checked the chain and sprockets for signs of damage. Everything checked out ok. I took it for a ride for the first time since the new tire today, and it was jumping alot in 4th gear only...Is this a common issue? I understand its probably a dog slipping...Has anyone had any exp. tearing into the transmission? I do ride her as she was meant to be ridden, hitting the twisties pretty hard. never any hole shots, wheelies, or all out drag racing. Are these transmissions known to be weak? I've put 6k miles on her since I've gotten it...LOVE THE BIKE, but getting tired of working on it

Ive never heard much about transmission breakage or problems on here,I guess anything is possible. Its odd it started doing it right after you had the rear wheel off. And only in 4th gear?
I would have everything checked possible to see whats up.
Teeth are all in good shape on the countershaft sprocket, cush hub rubbers are snug, wheel is aligned in swingarm, might be something simple.

It was doing it a little on the ride right before I put the new tire on. It does it only on acceleration and only in 4th gear. None of the others jump at all.

What do you mean by "jump"? Is it jumping out of gear? Or, the whole bike is jumping/lurching?

It slips for a split second, but never comes out of gear. if I'm really easy on it, it won't do it. It only happens when there is alot of torque on the bike in 4th gear. I've seen alot of sport bikes loose second from racing and power shifting, but never 4th.

FWIW, my friend's Z-rex lost fourth not too long ago. Third followed shortly after, and I spent a fair few hours in August standing around in a mutual friend's garage watching him swap in a "new" (eBay) tranny. He's a hooligan and does run it through the gears quite hard. Anyway, first and second were still fine when he swapped it. Fifth, too, AFAIK.
Cheers,
-Kit

Do you think it's actually jumping out of gear or perhaps the clutch is slipping? I agree if it was the clutch it'd likely be more than just 4th gear but it'd depend some on conditions. The clutch on my bmw seemed to only slip in 4th and 5th fwiw.

They are 'crash' boxes tough as old boots, my 900 trophy has a false neutral between 3rd and 4th but nothing serious. Thats after well ove 100k miles.
It sounds like the engagement dogs are either worn or bent. But you'd have to split the cases to find out...
