I've put on about 500 miles on the '99 1200 I just bought and I'm a little concerned about the shifting. I've has some problems downshifting. going for m 4th to 3rd or 2nd, I have a hard time getting it into that gear. It has also skipped a gear going up from 2nd to 3rd and I ended up in 4th. Whatchathink?

This is not normal- I suggest you try changing the oil first. Use a 10w40 Synthetic like Triumph recomends, you can also try Rotella 5w40 Synthetic (available at Wal-Mart).

i know what you are going through (false neutrals)my tbird did the same too except mine would get stuck in a false neutral then i had to pull in clutch coast to a stop then shift down and then proceed and it would be fine (so i thought??)but what i found out was these transmisions are solidily built and use a beefy shift detent where jap bikes use a more relaxed one. so you have to be precise and aggresive when shifting but a trick i learned here and in consumers news was to get ready before shifting meaning lift a little on the shift lever then shift up quick goes in like automatic i started that right away and never stopped again to down shift pretty slick. my dealer rode the bike and said it shifted nice but he did say (don,t baby it!! ride it )

Thanks for the suggestions!
What I discovered was that the linkage throw was longer then I expected and I was not allowing the shifter to come up all the way (after shifting from 4th to 3rd as an example) before trying to shift the the next lower gear (3rd to 2nd).

Anyway, after all this I did change to Mobile 1 symthetic oil and started shifting more aggressively. Big difference from my old Kawasaki Concours.
