Ignition Coil Wiring
I have a 2003 Trophy 1200 that suddenly quit running. I suspected the coils and purchased 2 new Nology replacements. The old coils were wired as follows (I think):
Left Side: green/brown = negative, yellow/white = positive
Right Side: blue/white = negative, green/brown = positive
Something tells me that is wrong. I have a Haynes manual but it only shows the wiring diagram for a 96 and later 900 with 3 single post coils. However in that diagram the green/brown is the common negative for all 3 coils. I suspect this is true for the 1200 as well with the green/brown going to the negative on both sides but I'd like confirmation before I blow something up.

I can verify for you that the green/brown is common ground for the triples according to both Haynes and FSM, but I don't see a wiring diagram for the fours in either book.
Maybe somebody better at electrickery can verify this, but I would think the negative wires would always have continuity to ground, and the positive would not? And if the wire itself is common, the green/brown connectors would have continuity with each other.
Cheers,
-Kit

I confirm what Kit says about the wires....however, I don't think new coils are going to solve your problem. Bad coils usually do not cause the bike to "suddenly" stop running. Now a pickup coil maybe....
Good luck and let u know how it turns out.

Green/brown should be connected to the +tive terminal on both coils, the other wires go to the Igniter which switches on the ground side.

Let me clarify. The bike didn't suddenly stop running, it suddenly stopped running properly. I could get it started if I held it at about half throttle but it ran rough and soon as I let off the throttle it stalled. It appears to be a problem with either the #3 or #4 cylinder but that is just a guess. There is connectivity between the 2 green/brown wires so I'm sure they are the ground wires but connecting the common wire to the positive terminals on the coils seems inconsistant with what I'm seeing in the Trophy 900 wiring diagrams.

There's a couple of shots of the coil wiring in this sequence that might help. TROPHY SERVICE Pictures 15 and 16 in the set.

I dunno.....sounding more like a fuel issue to me than coils.

Eh? The Green/Brown wires go to the engine kill switch in my wiring diagram & from there ultimately to battery +. (Service manual page 16.13 & Haynes the same.)
However, it appears these dual output coils use a single HT winding, one side to each of two plugs. So whichever coil primary polarity you use, one of the plugs is getting 'correct' polarity, the other the opposite. (The only difference being on which electrode the spark erosion occurs, centre or side. Generally, being 'meatier', the normal polarity erodes the side electrode rather than the centre.)

Whoever said it wasn't the coils was correct. I replaced both and it still won't start. I verified I have good spark. What's the next step, rebuilding the carbs? My local dealer tells me that's about a $400 job.
