Anyone changed their air filter? My '02 is coming up on 16k miles so I figure it's about due... I was going to take the bike in @ 20k for a valve check and I suppose I could have the shop change it while they're at it but I'd just as soon do as much of my own work as possible

Seems like a pretty tight fit, Is there any special procedures or tricks to getting the filter out and a new one in or is it just work at it till it goes kind of thing ?....Thanks. :???:

I just replaced it last saterday while performing some maintenance on my bike.

Something like this:
1. Remove the fuel tank
2. Remove the box behind the air filter (next to the battery)
3. Remove the small cover at the left side next to the carborator.
4. Remove the rubbers between carburator and engine and a big hose underneath the carburator
5. Move the carburator gently asside without releasing the throtle and chocke cable (I'm not sure if this is possible)
6. Remove the airbox.

Installation: the other way around. Should take a few hours if you take your time.

Hi Stevent

On my 95,1200 I remove the foam element from the air box, clean it in solvent dry it out and apply foam filter oil and reinstall in the air box. I really is a high quality foam element. Save yourself the $40.00.

To bad it is such a pain in the butt to get at.

You can also make some modification to an air filter of an other bike and put it in the filter box. This is the filter installed by the previous owner of my bike:

Ane here you can see a glimpse of the original filter that I baught at the Triumph dealer:

It is a pain to get the filter off/on the first time, since there's no way to do it without removing the carbs first. However, if you leave out the two small screws in the middle of the airbox on the bottom, and then cut just a bit off one outside corner of the outside opening, you can take the airbox halves apart and get the front part out w/o removing the carbs. Don't take too much off the opening or the boot rubbers won't cover the hole. Just use common sense and but a bit at a time untill you can get it back in.
You still can't get the back part off with the carbs on if memory serves, but that's OK since just taking the front off you can get the filter out. But it means when reassembling you'll need to put the back part on, then the carbs, then the front part. Next time just the front part comes on and off.
Hope this helps.
