Anyone know what out speedo error is? Mine seems to get worse with speed? 5-10mph at 80 plus.

The old rule of thumb was to figure a 10% speedo error on most any magnetic speedometer.

Just my $.02 worth: Jim

related anecdote: My cable finally broke at around 45k miles/5 years. After replacing it I noticed the error factor went up noticably. I figure this was due to the old one slowly deteriorating and the new cable bringing the speedo back up to 'factory' margin of error.

ps I checked speedo against my GPS before/after.

I had a friend check with his car, at 70 and 80 we were matched! I thought for sure we would be different!

Usually the speedo will be a little liberal, as it's illegal for the speedo to real low, but ok if it reads high - so many vehicles including cars/trucks read a little high. But the odometer is about spot on. Mine(odo) was tested when I ran the Mason Dixon 20-20 rally and it was at less than 3% error. They didn't give us individual reports, just said everyone was under 3% error except the Harley which was pushing 10% error (2004 Sporty).

BTW, cable speedos (like ours) generally have greater error in the speed reading than electrical speedometers - as long as the rear tire size and gearing don't change. So ours will be less succeptable to error changes with modification unless you change the wheel or size tire on the front.

My speedo is pretty much 5 mph off on the Trophy, and so is my wifes Sprint at most any speed (like 50-90mph) and this is verified with GPS. We always read exactly the same speed! The EU requires a -zero, + any speed, so they all error to meet this requirement. Or so I heard.

My Aprilia is right on, on the other hand, at all speeds. My Bandit is 13% off at all speeds, and looking at the speedo is mostly worthless. Most Bandit riders use a GPS or a bicycle speedo to give a accurate speed.

I would strap a GPS on if you are worried about speed.

These speedometers are about 10% optimistic on speed. Mine is within 1% on the odometer side. I hate having to calculate how screwed I am when ever I see a cop so I installed a bicycling computer.

I use the Sigma 800 cyclometer from Rider Wearhouse. Best $25 I spent on motorcycling. This unit WORKS. You can mess around trying to fit something else and it may not work for a variety of reasons. A GPS seems silly in comparison.
