Well i took proud ownership of a 1999 trophy 1200 on tuesday,so thought i would register and say hi ,

HI
but.....
After three great days of riding all over the county and feeling very happy with myself and my bike it all came to a grinding halt this evening. So if any one can help i would be grateful, pull away from house this evening it stalled 100 yards from house, started up again, ran rough for 1/2 mile and just died as soon as i pulled up at a junction and refused to start, after some ten minutes she fired up and idled fine but slowly the revs died and she cut out. After another few minutes she fired up again ( with some reluctance) but as soon as i put her in gear and gave it some revs she died again. Pushed her home ( ***** she's heavy) left her for half a hour for me to cool down she fired up and off i went for a tour of the block, ran fine , but again after a few minutes the same fault returns, slowly the revs die and she cuts out. I did notice a smell of fuel yesterday. any ideas folks, i am gutted !

When it happens, you could try turning the petcock to Pri position, instead of On. This will bypass the vacuum actuation of the petcock. Not sure if this is it, but the diaphram on these go out after a while, so better rule that out.

This may be obvious to you, but is the enrichener (choke) lever on?? It should be all the way forward. My Trophy will act like that when the choke is all the way back, and the bike is warm.

Have you checked the choke at the carb's?, the handle bar lever can be pushed right back but the slider on the carb's can stick, might be worth a look.
Could also be dirt in the fuel, or a vaccum hose loose/split.
Do you have a Scottoiler fitted?.

This is just a wag, but I would find some way of checking the coil/coils. It sounds to me like the coils could be shorting once they/it gets warm.

Maybe a more knowledgable person can chime in here.

from all the reading i've done here, the weak links seem to be: 1) fuel system, like the petcock, fuel lines squeezed by airbox, or the gas cap is creating vacuum lock. carbs or filters could be gunked up, though from personal experience I know the 1200 will run even with the filters and carb jets/needles severely gunked up; 2) ignition coil(s) going out.

On any bike that old with the expected miles, if no one has previously rebuild them, the stock carbs typically have problems and need to be rebuilt. Replace all the rubber bits and gaskets, and the jets/needles/emulsion tubes. Normally it's a slow insidious deterioration...

Hi Karl, Glad to have you with us. I also had trouble with my 1200 that sounds like yours. Check the crank position sensor and the coils. I was riding for about an hour and a half one day and the motor sputtered and died, wouldn't even try to start. After about 5-10 minutes it fired right back up and got me home. That turned out to be the crank position sensor. A month later on a very hot run to a Rat Raid, 100 degrees F , the motor started to miss like it was running on 2 or 3 cylinders, then would pop back to life for a few seconds. That turned out , after much searching, to be BOTH coils. Once they were replaced, everything was great! Jeff :???: :???: :???:

cheers jeff, she did it again tonight, couple of days of great riding and tonight just died, left her for a few minutes and away she went although nothing had happened. I was told by the guy i had bought it from the he had 2 new ignition coils fitted and had the carbs balanced recently, but i only have his say so for this as i dont have reciepts for the work. It is going into the shop tomorrow for a once over, really pissed me off as she runs so sweet when she aint messing me about !!
I will let you know if the guys find anything wrong with it .
