I have a '98 trophy 1200 with stock exhaust and want to change out to a loud mean sounding pipe.
I would like to hear from the good folks out there who have experience with aftermarket exhaust so that I can try to get it right. Stain-tune? D&D? something else? Pro's, con's?
Please help me if you can.
Thank you!

From the riders seat, the D&D's are just plain loud. They dont really sound that good, unless you are WOT, and they dont really quiet down at highway speeds. They seem to resonate around 3600-3900rpm, and get a kackle sound to them. Putting a little load on the motor, like climbing a small hill or what not, will really increase the volume also.
I let a friend ride my bike up the street, and noticed the sound really doesnt travel that much, they just seem to be loud right around the bike. I could hear it from maybe 1block away listening for it, but it wasnt nearly as loud as you'd think after riding the bike. They did get a little louder when he got on it, but not nearly as loud as some of the sport bikes i've heard buzzing around. I think you could ride the bike out of a neighborhood in the morning without pissing off the neighbors, if you stay under 3500rpms.

I had D&D's on mine. they were just plain annoying. If you are going for loud, they're the ticket. I prefer more of the touring in my sport tourer.

I agree with the others, D&D's are loud. Too loud in my opinion.

I have the D&D's on my 95. I like 'em. They are about the loudest you can go on a Trophy with a muffler. If you want louder, you can just remove the mufflers all together. While many like to think the D&D's are almost as loud as open pipes, they are no-where near as deafening as totally open, no muffler pipes. So if you just want totally loud, go without.

If you want straight pipe loud go buy a Harley.

Trophy w/o mufflers sounds much better than a Hardley w/o mufflers. :-D
But an old T-120 with TT pipes beats 'em both, hands down, no matter what. That's the sweetest sounding bike ever.

I've got D&D's on my Trophy and my T-Bird.They're just right on the T-Bird,but loud almost to the point of obnoxious on the Trophy, from the riders seat.My friends tell me they sound cool, but after a couple hundred miles they start to wear on me.I wear ear plugs and it helps quite a bit.The stock pipes were WAY too quiet.Kind of like a sewing machine on steroids, but the D&D's are at the other end of the spectrum. All in all I wish now,I'd have spent a couple hundred more and got the Staintunes. To me, THEY sound just right.Opinions are like arseholes though...

My '96 came with D&Ds and they were pretty loud, but not obnoxious, I thought. The bike had a nice roar, halfway between the bass of a twin and the scream of a 4 cylinder. I took them off because I use it exclusively for touring, commuting and running errands, and it was a bit much, especially for touring. Plus there was a small rust hole at the front of one. I got a pair of stockers with the bike, and I put them on. I kinda miss the roar sometimes.
Bikerdude, if you want to test drive mine, you can have em for the price of postage. My Trophy's a 900, I don't know if the exhaust is exactly the same. Also keep in mind that they are glasspacks, so the longer they've been around, the louder they get.
