Any way to make the speedometer on a 2001 trophy 1200 a little more accurate? Mine is fast by about 7 MPH. Also, where can a person get a repair manual for 2001 trophy? Just got my new(used) Trophy yesterday and it is one fine bike. The fit, finish and speed are all wonderful

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum.

I suppose you could have the speedo callibrated, you'd need to do some diggin' to find out who would do it, the local cop's can certainly do it but whether they would or not I don't know, but they might tell you who can.

Thanks, there is a place just down the road that calibrates cop cars and they are open to the public. I will stop by and see what they say,

I read on the Iron Butt site that most speedometers have about a 10% error in them. I am kinda curious as to how much they charge you for something like that.

I have found that when I change the gear ratios, or the rear tire size from a 170 / 60 to a 180 / 55, to increase load carrying/ torque ability, the speedo reading will vary. I currently run the stock for 2001 model, 19 / 40 gear and 170 / 60 tire, and at 3200 rpm the speedo indictes 60mph. I have no idea if the speedo or tacho is correct but I am achieving just over 50 mpg so all is well. :???:

I also see 3000RPM and 60MPH but it takes about 1 minute and 6 seconds to go one mile. So that would be about 55MPH actual speed or somewhere close to that. Tires are original Trophy tires and sprocket stock. At around 90MPH it error factor gets greater.

At 3000 rpm I am showing between the 55 / 60 mark and would guess it to be around 57 mph. Have not tried the stopwatch routine as no accurate mile markers that I know of around this neck of the woods. Using the speedo mile counter would be suspect as it is part of the system we would need to check for accuracy. :???:

according to the speedometer calibration place i called, they can not do anything to the speedometer like they can on a car. I guess i will learn to live with the error. At least it is on the fast side so less likely to get a ticket for going to far over the speed limit.

The speedo is driven by the front wheel so it should'nt matter what size rear tyre or sprockets you run, although it would change the speedo to rpm ratio..........anyway you shouldn't be looking at your speedo, you should be looking where your going.
