New Trophy?

I was told yesterday that Triumph are making a new Trophy to be released later this year. It will have a 1200cc 3 cylinder motor.

Anyone else heard about this?

Now there's a Triumph concept I would buy! Logically, I think it would be going against: Honda's VFR 1200, Kawi's Concours 14, and BMW's K1300GT. Or maybe Yamaha's FJR and Honda's ST1300? I don't see it competing with the Triumph Tiger or Ducati's new Multistrada 1200, nor do I see it taking on the BMW GS series. I would however expect a new Trophy to offer something unique and appealing over the other bikes I've mentioned. Hope the rumor is true.

Rumours like this have been around for several years now and none have come to fruition. I too would love a new Trophy, but I think it's highly unlikely as the previous reply says it would have to compete with some very serious, heavy weight metal from BMW, Kawasaki Honda and now Ducati. It would need shaft drive, traction control, electronic suspension adjustment, keyless starting, adjustable engine mapping on the move and all the usual goodies a quality touring bike needs and although Triumph are thriving I don't think they would invest in a bike like this against such competition. Too expensive to develop and market. Also it doesn't fit with their 'niche' marketing philosophy over the last few years.

It's funny how your thoughts change over the years when you consider your "ultimate" or "retirement" bike. I have been a lifelong fan of BMW's and only happened to buy my first Trophy when I didn't have the money to buy the next BMW I desired. I had planned on only keeping the Trophy for a couple of years at most but ended up keeping it five years before I got my dream bike a BMW R1150 RT. I realized how much I loved the Trophy after I sold it and after two years of riding the BMW was lucky enough to find another in pristine condition.
What you have stated about the competition a new Trophy would have is one of the reasons I came back to a Trophy. Other than being the most comfortable sport tourer I have ever owned both of my Trophy's have been maintenance free. (so far) I had been among the last of my group of BMW riding buddies to get rid of their bikes due to high and expensive maintainance costs. Mine left me stranded twice in 2000 miles and my friends have similar stories.
Maybe it's my age but other than possibly having ABS I have no need for all of the expensive software being built into the new bikes that if they fail cost an arm and a leg to replace. There is something to be said for reliability and simplicity. I can think of no bike I would replace my Trophy with at this point in time other than a new Trophy if they do actually come out with one.

My local dealer was at the national dealers meeting and had a chat with a big wig from Triumph. He said that Triumph is going to go from 18 to 22 models in the next two years. I think that makes the chances of a new Trophy pretty good. It is a segment that Triumph has been a part of in the past and one their major competitors have models in. Seems to me that it would be a mistake to not offer a model.

There have been sightings around the factory for over a year. There is a spy shot of the updated Sprint with bigger panniers etc in MCN this week, but still no hard evidence of a Trophy.

There was also another rumour that they are testing a 1600cc Twin engine for the Trophy? Not sure how good that would be.

new trophy?

i know the first bike will be a new sprint, thats some thing thats known. the other bike that i heard of is a adventure bike in the lighter weight catagory (slim and trim tiger cub 800) i heard that it will come in 2 styles, cast wheels for street type riders and spokes for ADV riders. a big sport touring/busa like bike has been rumored for a while. not to mention a large and in-charge daytona.

I agree with Doug from Canada. Having travelled across most of Europe and Scandinavia regularly in the last 5 years on my Trophy with total reliability I have lost count of the number of times I have stopped to help out other bikers broken down and frequently BMW's. All the bells and whistles are fine, but 4 carbs, a bullet proof engine and decent ergonomics can get you anywhere. I met a BMW GS 1200rider with all the extras and more on a ferry from Sweden to Denmark last year. We were both heading to Esberg for the same return ferry home to England - a 250 mile ride. He admitted that he carried £500 (about $750 US dollars) worth of spares with him. Fuel pump bits mostly, because his machine was so unreliable. The dealer had recomended he carry them. He looked at my machine with barely disguided contempt and shot off into the distance. I arrived at the ferry port 2 hours before him - guess what- he broke down and his GPS sent him around the houses.

The new sprint shown briefly in the British motorcycle press this week looks interesting and about as close as we might get to a new Trophy.

dontcha love it when that happens :p

having had half a dozen beemers before my 1st Triumph ('97 900 Sprint) I'm deeply impressed with the engineering on the Triumph, not to mention the ease with which it comes apart and can be tinkered with. It also had character, something I think Beemers used to have but have lost of late.

Since the 1200GS arrived in 2004 I have tried them several times and been unimpressed - I owned the 1150GS at the time - the 1200 just struck me as soulless and plasticky. The warranty issues they have had have been numerous - nope - make mine a trumpet. Low tech in this day and age, but then you don't need a laptop to mend them!

And no beemer ever sounded like my Sprint does as it passes 5000rpm.

Aussie magazine claims a Trophy with 1300cc triple and shaftdrive already developed and close to being ready for release. They claimed it was one of the models that Triumph were introducing to increase their entire range of models.
If the media say it is so then it must be, right

Well what do ya know - I'm happy to be proven wrong. This weeks Motorcycle News here in the UK has a full page story line on new Triumphs in the planning and a Trophy would seem to be on the cards after all. Still speculation to some degree as the factory won't confirm it yet - but they hav'nt denied it either! A 1200 triple apparently, aimed at the luxury market sector and the engine is already fully operational. Watch the news carefully folks over the next 6 months, because we can practically guarantee Triumph will have a disguised test mule out on the roads round the Midlands soon and it's bound to be photographed by someone and the press will publish it. I really hope they get it right because the competition in this sector is red hot.

2012 Trophy

I was told by someone at the Triumph anual sales event that the new Trophy would be a 2012 model. It will be a 1200 triple, shaft drive and have all the extras (adjustable windscreen, heated stuff, ABS, traction control, etc.) to compete with others in the marketplace.

So it sounds like it's a year away at least.

All my rides are under 1000 miles on twisty mountain roads, so a big, heavy, a$$-raising, clunky-shifting, drive shaft bike is exactly NOT what I'm looking for. If I wanted a Rocket III, I'd buy a Rocket III.

I'll certainly look at the new Trophy, but probably end up waiting for the ST's bars to get higher.

Well lets hope they get it right. Its the only gap left in their range now. Over here it seems Triumph was the best selling brand last year, good news. What ever they do l hope it has proper size panniers and not the small ones found on the Tiger!
