replacing rectifier

Hi folks,

Just got myself a 1999 Trophy 900 and it has broke down on me after first ride, approx 100 miles. Recovery mechanic reckoned it was the rectifier that needed replacing. Dont have the Haynes manual yet, so can you tell me where the rectifier is located on the bike?

Also any tips on best places to look for replacement part in UK?
Thanks

Slow down.
Give us the symptoms of the breakdown.
Don't start replacing parts or tearing that girl to pieces just yet.
Search this site(trophy only) for similar breakdowns.

Carry on!

Thanks for the reply.
The symptoms were the engine cutting out on me as i was slowing down coming up to a set of traffic lights. Then it refused to start again - battery was flat. The mechanic has noted on his paperwork 'Suspect regulator/rectifier - charging 11.30V'.

Just put the battery back in after a charge and it started OK. Is 11.3V low? What is the ideal voltage?

Those type of regulators in the automotive-style alternators typically fail in a 'high' mode, rather than low.
i.e. when the rpm is increased the output voltage continues to climb, instead of being 'regulated'.

First off check the fuse - that is the most likely issue as to why your battery is not seeing the charge voltage.
(I'm not sure which fuse it is exactly, on your model - should be either 30 or 40A fuse)

With your engine running, you should see more than 13.5V at least across the battery terminals. When you increase the engine rpm it may change slightly, but should never go over 15V max (and more likely less than that)

Hi DEcosse,

Thanks for the reply. I checked the fuses and they are all OK. Got a long journey tomorrow, London to Glasgow, hopefully trouble free. I'm hoping that giving the battery a full charge will do for now to get me home and i can investigate further then.

Johnny, please check the actual volts at your battery with the engine running - if you are not getting at least 13.5V, DO NOT GO!
Your battery will never power your bike for that whole trip and if your alternator is indeed only feeding it with 11.3V it will not re-charge while running.
