very rattley 1200 trophy...

Hi guys, wondering if someone can throw a bit of light on a possible problem.
I have had a 1994 900 Trophy for the last 12 months and reckon it's a great bike. The wife and I are going to be doing some touring this summer so I have just bought a 1996 1200 Trophy.
The 900 has like zero rattles from the engine or transmission when it's running but the 1200 clatters like crazy at idle but the rattles seem to disappear once over 1500-2000 rpm. There is also oil dripping from the airbox breather pipe. Runs ok though, no misses or anything and no smoke from exhaust.
Thoughts welcome. Thanks.

The rattle is normal. The oil dripping from the breather is probally that the oil is over-serviced.

Oil in the airbox is due to a fault within the engine, mine had suffered it from new and was fixed under warranty just before I parted with cash. A non return valve passing? Eventually it fills the airbox up faster than you can fill the sump.

Per trackandrace.com workshop for the Trophy 1200 the rattle could be from balancer(s) needing adjustment.

It may be the alternator bolt

If your "rattle" is just noise, and not vibration, then this may help. If the "rattle" is both noise and vibration, this is not your culprit.

My '97 900 was very loud and rattlely at start/idle when I first got it - the dealer said it was normal due to the straight cut gears. The noise "went away" at about 2000 RPM but always returned when I slowed. After reading this forum I believed it to be a sheared alternator bolt. Sure enough, it was. Had the bolt/shaft replaced and the bike is now very quiet at start/idle. Night and day difference: just scan for topics on "alternator shafts" and you will find a lot of info on it.

Not much I can help you with on the oil issue, haven't experienced that as yet.

Good luck!
