Stuck at 38 US mpg

I used to get 36 mpg.
I went to the KN airfilter and no change in MPG, but does run better.
Changed front sprocket to the 20 tooth (40 on rear).

This got me to the 38. With these changes I was hoping to bust 40.
Anymore ideas?

Mark

You may want to change your rear ratio some more. As I understand it an even ratio 20/40 19/38 et al will wear it a repeatable and quick fashion. The same teeth hit the same rollers every revolution.

Maybe just a one or two tooth addition in the rear would break it up some.

As to mileage, carbs balanced? idle jets properly adjusted?, tires properly inflated? chain well lubed? Fuel lines solid and not seeping? carb floats adjusted? loose weight , remove stuff from panniers...

Lot's of little adjustments and tinkering can provide some good, solid MPG gains.

Definately YMMV,
Andrew

i have an 02 1200 with the 19/40 combo. the needles in the carbs were set at the number 2 position (from top, bike would not take throttle in number 1, too lean) with this set-up on a full day ride NEVER going over 60mph I can get 50/51 mpg. It is a very boreing ride. same set up commuting to work 12.5 miles away with bursts of 100 mph the bike gets 37 mpg. stop and go and never staying warm. there was a flat spot in the throttle off idle and when trying to pass anything so i went back in and raised the needles to the number 3 position. bike runs strong everyplace in the throttle position but this cost me a few mpg's. Now on a sane trip my best is about 48mpg and commuting is 35/36. it was worth the cost to get the bike to run better. these bikes CONSUME fuel. want to go fast, it will cost you. stay on the back roads and enjoy the ride and you will do better. my 2k trip to indy for the gp race (ride took me into canada and down left me with a 40mpg average). My fjr1300 with f.i. gave me at least 41 when commuting. I doubt triumph will ever produce the much wished for updated s/t bike, but if they do it will have f.i. then all this will be taken care of.

Being in the "family way" I just get to ride back and forth to work. It is 15 miles on a parkway with a 55 MPH speed limit.
It has been several years since I have had my carbs apart, so I am having a hard time visualizing the notches on the jet rod.
