Stumbling 1200, Need advice

A perfect morning ride went a little sideways today. I have a 2002 1200 with 6k miles and have had zero issues until this morning. The bike will not take throttle and dies completely below 2000 rpm. Once the bike clears 3000 rpm it runs fine. Pull in the clutch at speed and it falls to about 1000rpm, sputters and then quits running. The bike always fired back up, but again, it sputters and coughs off idle up to about 2500 rpm. Feels electrical in the seat of the pants but any advice and help is appreciated.

Stumblin' along

19 people will recommend you replace the coils with Nology coils. My stumbling problems turned out to be a rusting gas tank filling up the carb float bowls. Still need to coat the tank.

I am one of the 19 but first check the fuel delivery, especially the vacuum line from the #3 crb top to the tank fitting. A kinked or rotted vac. line will cause that type of problem as well.

Keep it coming

I will take all advice thrown my way. All sounds like sound advice so far and I have read many posts on the coil issue. It is amazing though, this happened out of nowhere. No hint of a problem two days before when I was riding with my son, bike ran perfect. thanks again... vintage96e

I'm another of the 19 and Nology can be found here:

http://www.nology.com/profiremotor.html

I also agree with BlueTrophy. See my post on the "Vapor Lock" thread on page one about the vent tube. Check the vent tube first as it is a free fix.

I will be 3 of 19.

BUT look at the fuel and vaccum lines first or replace them while you do the coils.

Don't forget the inline fuel filters.

My 900 just wasnt running right. Slow starting, somewhat hesitant and other little things that just didn't seem right.
Battery was 41/2 years old. Changed it out for a new one and the difference is remarkable.
The electrics on these girls is quirky at best.
The old one had the amps to turn the starter just fine but the voltage must have dropped off to where the finer electrics weren't fed properly.

Not saying this is your problem but if the battery is old you may want to try a new one.
All is well until the next event!
Carry on!

Not completely fixed

Just put the nology coils on and the bike is somewhat better, at least it will idle. The RPM's hang and the idle fluctuates, Still did not seem right!! Drained float bowls to discover what appears as dirt and water. Hard to imagine I got a bad batch of gas but you never know. Tank is remarkably clean. I am still not convinced that this is the problem. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them head to toe. The inline filters were dirty but not terrible. I am in the process of reinstalling carbs and will update as I go. Thanks to all for advice, the saga continues....
