random loss of power

Hello,

I just bought a '96 Trophy 1200 and sometimes it will loss power briefly. When this happens I grab WOT and after a few seconds the power kicks back in. It is like the bike isn't getting gas or spark. If I don't WOT then the bike will coast to stop, like I hit the kill switch, but then it will start back up and run like a champ. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this type of problem and knows the cause.

When this happened on my 1200, it was the ECU that was failing.

Others have had this problem and found it to be: (in no particular order)

coils,
pickup
bad grounds
bad spark plug wires
fuel lines between petcock and carbs
vacuum line from carb to petcock
bad plugs

When I fixed mine, I tried the easy stuff first, being in denial about the ECU. Because they NEVER go bad, but for me it was the ecu.

As always, YMMV

Don't spend any money yet. This sounds electrical. Clean the grounds before you spend a dime.

replacing fuel & vacuum hoses

I had a fuel leak which I fixed no the side of the road by cutting the hose shorter and reattaching; it's scary when gas is flowing onto the headers and steaming off. I'm going to replace all the hoses with automotive ones as suggested in other threads. I'm hoping this is also the cause of the 'random loss of power'. We shall see. While I'm at it I'll also check the GND wires.

Dame Mikurek, you were almost a "crisppy critter"! Let her cool down next time.

might be fixed

Well I haven't had any problems since I changed the fuel and vacuum lines. I got ride of the filter inserts because there was a ton of crud in them and replaced with inline filters. I hesitate to say this it is fixed because the problem is random.

If it happens again, my next plan of attach is to shorten the optional factory alarm system ground wire, since that does not require any new parts.

I found this excellent site about the Trophy:

Fixed!

I'm happy to say that the new fuel and vacuum lines fixed by random loss of power problem.

Just for giggles, check your kickstand switch and return spring. They are known for losing contact when crudded up.

Cheers,
Zaphod
