Hi All,

A trumpy owning friend of mine pointed me in your site's direction. I need some advice from owners past and present and any general feed back or things to look out for.

The basic background is that my Dad is looking to buy a 1992 Trophy 1200 from a mate of his that swapped it for a hotrod or something. I've never seen the bike and wont be able to test ride it for him but he has asked me to find out more about the model so we have something to go on.

What are the pros and cons of this bike? Are there any major faults? What should he be paying special attention to? Basically - help!

Another thing to mention, the guy wants 3700 Euro, is this a fair price? Also, the bike is in Holland. Other than that I don't know much more. I'll try to find out how many kms etc soon.

Any comments at all will be appreciated and any other resource sites would be great.

Thanks for your time, if you ever get around to visiting netrider.net.au be sure to say "hi".

Deyago :-D

All I can tell you is they are a well made bike, equal to any of the other brands, that only suffers from minor problems and provided all maintence has been performed it should be OK. As to fair value I cannot say but ebay in respective countries may provide an idea. This site has a great deal of answers to most bike issues and a search of such issues usually turns up advice that is relevent. Holland to Melbourne ? be a little expensive for delivery or is your base in the old country ? :???:

I had a 1992 1200 Trophy with 45,000 miles on it when I exchanged it for 2000 1200 I now own. In the years I had it I had no major problems at all. The engine is bullet proof if it is looked after and is 112BHP as opposed to 108BHP of the latter models. It is not an unattractive bike either.

As for price well they hold there value quite well if looked after but what about shipping costs or am I getting confused and your dad is not in Melbourne.

Things to look out for would be the usuall, oil leaks, worn or damaged fork seals, damage to the foot pegs and underneath of exhausts (sure sign its been down the road) as these tend to get missed if its fallen over etc.
Hope this is of some help.
Ray

Ahha ! maybe I see the light. You were transported to the colonies, (steal a loaf of bread did we ?) only to find on your arrival that it is a great place for bike riders, and poor dad is still in the old country :???:
The Haynes service and repair manual, edition 2162, on the 91 to 99 models provides some good background information on the bike.

Ha! No, sorry, born here. It's Dad who decided to live in the past and move to Holland. The bike is where he is and there are no plans to import the bike to Australia - too much hassle.

Thanks for the Haynes suggestion, anyone know where an on-line version might be lurking?

OK my mistake and to make up for it try www.motorbyte.com/mmm/pages/reviews/reviews and you will find a reasonable road test of a 1998 model 1200 which reports on the bike. There were minor changes in the model over the years but basically remained the same mechanical design from day one until the removal of the model in 2002 / 2003. Mine has 20000 plus miles and has only required normal services / tyres / chain and has been excellent in performing as a sports tourer. I have found aftermarket accessories to be readily available with several suppliers offering windscreens, risers, exhausts, seats, lowering dogbones. I have run mine up over the 110mph a few times, with adequate power available should I want to go higher, and quite stable at that speed so dad should have no prpblem on the autobahns. Fuel consumption is around the 40 mpg depending on style of riding.

I use yahoo to get to the following sites for reports on the Trophy and many other bikes. www.motorcyclesurvey.com
www.motorcycle.com ( Motorcycle Online, in their archives section they have a test on a 1996 Trophy 900 )
www.bikez.com ( full specification sheet for Trophy )
www.motorbyte.com ( Minnesota Motorcycle Monthly, they have a 1999 trophy 1200 test )
Michel's motorcycle road test links ( rider reports )
Leon's motorbike road test links( rider reports )
If you cannot gain entry to the www. web sites then try a search with the company names I have listed behind the www. web site reference.
