On my latest trip to Mexico (see trip report at
http://www.triumphrat.net/ride-trip-...co-mexico.html), the oil pressure light came on on the way home. Considering the location and the way the engine sounded (normal), I rode it till I heard it start knocking, then shut it down.
We trailered the bike back home. When the mechanic took the oil pump apart, he found the inner rotor worn to the point it would not seal to the outer, static part. He didn't find any brass or ferrous material in the oil pan. A new oil pump is $300 and a 6-week delivery from Triumph, so he had a local machinist mill up a new rotor for $100. The compression check showed 120 - 125 lbs. in each cylinder. The engine can be rolled over by hand. We plan to back-flush the oil passages in the engine and put the thing back together and see how it runs.
Any thoughts?
The bike currently has about 85,000 miles on it so an engine rebuild would not make sense economically. I was quoted $3,500 for the rebuild kit, plus labor and haven't found a used engine to put in it. Anyone have an old Daytona 1200 motor laying around?
