Improving fuel mileage
I read about guys that can get 50+ mpg out of the Trophy 900. Was just wondering how I can improve mine. My 96 Trophy 900 gets an average of 40 mpg. I have heard that you can drop some teeth on the rear sprocket. Was just wondering how much of a difference the overall power and fuel mileage would be if I were to change the gearing. Bike has almost 46000 miles on it if that happens to make any bit of difference to any suggestions. Also, how much would the sprocket change drop for RPMs at about 70 mph on the interstate? Thank you very much

Use my mph/rpm calculator, just change the numbers you want to (you'll have to check your handbook for your original sprockets, the gearboxes are all the same), press Submit, and see the results.

Better mileage?
Hey, Ive got a '95 trophy 3 and it was my first sport touring bike .... I was raised on dirt. The first month I got 45-47 m.p.g. Then I got used to it...I get 35-36m.p.g. and have a heck of a lot more fun!!! I get 6000 miles out of a set of AVON Storm STs......I just met a lady with 97k on a yamaha 600 she gets 11k out of the same tyres!!! It's all in the wrist!!!

Count the teeth on both of your sprockets. Your bike might be set up for aggressive riding instead of MPG. For best MPG go big in front and small in rear. (That sounds funny)

If the person who gets 50 Mpg is from the UK, then your 40 Mpg would be the same. As the Imperial pint (20oz) is 25% larger than the American pint (16oz) therefore both vehicles would be using the same amount of fuel per mile.

Just rode from Dallas to El Paso and back to Dallas this past weekend. Average consumption was approx. 48.5 mpg.
1296 miles on 26.75 gallons.
I did change my sprocket set to 19/40 from a 17/44 that came stock on the bike ('96 1200).

Thanks for sharing your gearing calculator, Mc, it is very kind of you.
Question, though, do you REALLY run 19/40 gearing?
The 92 Trophy I have just used as a donor bike for my Thunderbird/Trophy hybrid sidecar outfit had 18 and 45.
19/40 seems somewhat overgeared to me.

From what I have read 19/40 was an offered gearing from the factory on the later Trophys. The 19/40 combo pulls real well and I have no problem when riding 2-up with all three bags. 2-up for me is less than 300 pounds though.

The 19/40 was standard from (IIRC) 2001 for the 1200s.
A sidecar outfit would certainly need lower gearing than a solo, not so much for cruising (where you can always stick to a lower gear) but when moving from rest; the extra load is quite considerable, fighting the weight and the sideways pull.

I have two (likely stupid - sorry) questions.
Are the gear ratios essentially the same for the Trophy 900?
Am I right in thinking that you would get better economy at lower rpm for a given speed but that such a setup would result in less acceleration?
Many thanks for your help, Adam
