We had a thread on that some time back and one fellow said that his dealer was able to order a 20t one. I'm going to check with my dealer in the near future about it as I'd like one installed at the 30,000 mile service........yeah I've reached that point in my life. Heck, I don't even work on my new car either, only my '70 Tiger. Whoever finds out first, please post the part #.

Needless to say, if I find out, I'll post it: Jim

Sprockets

I have a 19 tooth on my Bonnie Black. I wasn't able to find a 20 at the time. It makes a pretty noticeable difference... like the missing 6th gear.

Question netmaker

I know Sprocket Specialists have a good range of sprockets for the Trophy and I think you can purchase fronts from 16 to 19 and rears from 38 to 48.
If you have a 19 front and a 42 rear you have a final ratio of 2.2.
If you can find and fit a 20 front and keep the rear 42 you have final ratio of 2.1
If you keep the 19 front and change rear to 40 you have a final ratio of 2.1
I think the 2001 model was the only one that used the high ratio of 2.2 and then they returned to 18 / 42 for a ratio of 2.3 for the models in 2002 and 2003.
Like I say I think that is the sprocket useage and I thought the UK / European models may have been slightly higher geared for their higher motoway / autoban speed limits.

Actually, the 2002 1200 model uses the 19/40 setup, and that seems to be lowest (highest?) factory combination.

Yes, a 20T sprocket is available as an OEM part. I did the conversion a few months ago. 20T front and 39T rear. You should be able to order it directly from any Triumph dealer. Takes about 2 days to come in. No special price, about the same as other sizes. It is carried as an OEM part. The dealer checked for me with Triumph and there are no obstructions to worry about. Fits without any mods to the bike. Do yourself a favor and add a new chain and rear sprocket so you start out fresh.

My experience has been very nice. Far less shifting, better fuel economy (high 40s to low 50s), super quiet at freeway speeds and nearly vibrationless at any speed.

Your comfortable cruising speed goes up considerably. Around town, you get out of first and hang in second. You'll rarely shift unless going to a complete stop.

Getting up to freeway speeds and far beyond is a 1,2,3 affair and then up to 6th for cruise. Your effective speed range of 3rd speed is huge. What I notice most is that if I'm riding next to someone else, they are shifting twice as much as am I.

Country roads are a 4th speed deal and you have a real wide range of speed available. When you hit a long stretch and want to wind out a little, just open the throttle and you'll find yourself at an insane speed as the corner comes up.

I commute two up and have yet to find I miss the shorter gearing. Your startup is like a between 1st and 2nd affair. Two up I can easily pull away from a stop with no drop in RPM, I just accelerate away with barely any clutching. I do notice I need a bit more clutch work if starting from behind the crown of San Francisco hills but not very much. One up, none more than with stock gearing.

The 20t sprocket sings a little more but not enough to be bothersome. What I account this to is the lower RPMs and therefore less engine noise so you hear everything else a bit more.

I wouldn't go back to as shipped gearing for anything. One caveat, I'm 160lbs and my 2 upper is about 105. If you are quite a bit heavier total weight, probably stay with a 40 rear.

Just for the record, in terms of the ratios within the Bonnie gearbox, the gear that was "missing" was 5th compared with the ratios in the Trophy's 'box. MPH per 1000 rpm in top (5th or 6th respectively) is a different story.

Note the closeness of 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th.

When adding the 20T front with the 39T rear, how many links are in your chain?
I replaced sprockets and chain last year so I don't want to purchase the whole assy, but the increased fuel economy whould pay for the sprocket pretty quickly.
What is the part number?

BUMP - Because I am buying a 1999 Trophy 1200 and really want to know the answer. I'm buying the Trophy for a daily driver, 75 miles round trip to/from work. Want the most fuel-efficient set-up available...
