Time to ditch the airbox?

Hi guys,

For my next trick, I'm thinking of junking the airbox (I have a spare) and fitting cone filters. Anyone done this before? I expect to fit richer jets and wear earplugs, but anything else I should know about?

I'm not concerned about losing some low-rev torque; the Trophy has gallons of it. I'm doing it more for the sound; here in South East England there are loads of clueless car drivers just waiting to knock you off "sorry, I didn't see him".

from what i keep hearing, the cv carbs on the Trophy will not work to well with cone type air filters. i have talked with a few bike mechanics as well as a couple of people here and they all say the same thing. on the other hand i've heard of a few people that have done it and they say it will work, so i dont know for sure. i was thinking of doing it myself just to get rid of that impossible air box but..... if you decide to do it, please post your results with pics too. i just noticed the year of your bike, not sure if you have the same carbs i got. dont know much about older Trophys. anyway good luck.

Yeah, I've got Mikunis whereas you guys will have Keihins. This gave me the idea http://www.dynobike.com/gallery/tech...y_900_pods.htm

If only for the sound, how about super loud horns? There are some really effective compressed gas canister horns that not even Piaas can touch. You just replace the canister every so often but when you lay on the horn, they'll hear you in the Urals.

That's something I hadn't thought about and is probably a good idea, but what I'm really after is a constant, running noise. The sort of thing that would alert car drivers to your presence as you came up behind them.

I've got hold of some richer main jets for the Mikunis and will fit them after my exams end in mid May. Until then, the airbox stays =)

A few of us over in the T3 Sport/Touring section are fitting pods, I am currently doing so too, most of us are going to Keihins at the same time to overcome MPG issues and the wear that occurs on higher mileage Mikuni's.

I too have heard that the CV's doesn't like pods but some people seem to have had some success so I thought I'd give it a go, I had a dyno run a while back as standard so I have something to compare it to when I do the swap...we'll see I suppose..?

Couple links to threads may help..?

Thanks, that's really interesting. I may go to Keihins at some stage, but have bought some richer jets for the mikunis (as well as new tubes and needles) so will try them first. I'm not too worried about gaining a couple of mpg.
