I'm a HS teacher, my wife doesn't like to go out to eat on our side of town because the wait staff or kitchen staff, etc, always has an ex student or two (I have been at the same school for eleven years ), but this story is about tickets. So, I'm on my way home the other evening, I had been at a meeting off campus and was going a different way home from usual, a 25 mph road. I thought that the 25 mile zone started at the flashing sign about 1/2 mile further down (but I was wrong) I was going about 40, as I cross over a bridge I see a patrol car hidden behind the abutment and the officer out with the radar gun and he's flagging me over. Well, I was a little bit surprised, but I pull over to take my medicine. As I pull my helmet off I hear, "Oh, hi Mr. P are you still teaching at Valley?" I think, oh no, this could suck, I hope he got a good grade. It turned out to be one the the kids from my first graduating class, and he did remember me fondly, so only a warning. As he is writing that out, a carload of my students drove by , circled back and waved and laughed. the LEO says, "Hey if they come back again I'll throw you in the back and you can tell them you were resisting, that'll up your street cred"

This is not a motorcycle story but.... About three years ago my son and Iand another team mate were traveling across state to race mountain bikes - Family cage with Team Bike Worx on back. I was of course in a hurry to get there so I was not at the speed limit. Looked in my rear view mirror and saw local sheriff on my tail. Just like everyone else I go "Oh Crap" and slow down. No lights but the officer stays behind us for several miles. Gradually he pulls besdie me, turns on his lights and then holds up a copy of Mountain Bike magazine. Gives us the thumbs up - turns off the light and speeds off. Checking out our bikes, I guess. Needless to say we were stoked. I can honestly say for every knuclehead with a badge I have met, I have met 10 genuine good guys with a badge.

In 21 years as a LEO, I always try to give biker a break. I know what a ticket will do to your insurance. I have found out that a friendly warning does more than a ticket. I will also thank you for wearing a helmet, proper armour and good boots.

Now if I see you in Harley crusier wear, ballcap on backward, shorts, tank top and flip flops, wwweeellll thats another story..............

I worked 31+ years in Law Enforcement (now honorably retired). When I began My career, we used our heads and respect to enforce the laws. Towards the end of my career, Physical control of a situation became the rule.

One day, not long before retirement, myself and two friends were hunting (unsuccessfully) sooo, decided to try another area. We needed to go through a two bit town to get to the new area. We had cleared our weapons before we got on the highway. While we were clearing our weapons, a kinky haired, treehugger type, white female passed us, sloooowly, then sped off. We thought nothing more about it.

As we entered this $.25 town. a local yokel pulled out behind us. As we proceded into and through the town, more and more LYs and some County Mounties became visible. I knew something was up soooo. I pulled into the first available parking space.

"Hostile stop" procedures were initiated and we were all ordered out of the vehicle, and onto the ground, one at a time. I Identified myself as a brother LEO but, It made no difference. My buddies and I were cuffed and placed in the back of separate cruisers. The vehicle was searched, actually, ransacked.

While restrained in the cruiser, an older, experienced CM approached and said "what a bunch of sh*t this is, you guys were not doing anything to deserve this type of treatment. A citizen complaint was filed for "brandishing weapons, I'll personally throw the book against the person that filed the complaint." He turned and walked to the driver side window of a vehicle which I recognized as being driven by the "kinky headed" tree hugger.

Anyway, I got back at the LY sergeant who supervised this whole CF. I told him to give all the involved officers (there were many) On The Job Training for "hostile stop" procedures or I would file a greivence Via my department (which was a very large state agency). There were so many personnel involved, I know he was days completing and distributing the paperwork.

Sounds like your complaint was more against the person you seem to be stereotyping as a "kinky haired treehugger" than the LEOs involved. That citizen filed the complaint and the LEOs involved handled it accordingly. The "hostile stop" (Felony Stop) by your description, was executed without fault. NO LEOs hurt and neither you or your buddys hurt (except for your pride).

Grumps story sounds like it might have happened after 9/11. The country has changed since then and I know we're all paying for it in ways we might not even realize. There's tons of scared people out there and all of them are ready to dial 911 at the drop of a hat.

This story isn't about tree huggers, though I did marry one from Vermont. About two winters ago before I got the Scrambler I was on my way to work on my Savage down here in Florida. I was stopped at a light on US 1 behind two huge dump trucks that were kind of diagonally spaced. I was running late and knew that they both take forever to get up to speed so I cut between them and got in front of one of them. Unfortunately I didn't do the obigatory cop scan before I made the move and heard a siren whoop and was waved over by a sheriff in a parking lot.

I pulled in and stopped the bike and he walked up and asked me if I knew what I just did was illegal. I told him honestly that I was from Massachusetts and wasn't really sure but I was positive now and would never make that mistake again. It was about two weeks before the holidays so I added "if there's any way that you could cut me a break I'd really appreciate it and would be extra careful from now on, sir." He ran my license for warrants and came back and handed it back and told me to keep my promise and ride safe. I thanked him and told him "absolutely, sir."
