How Do You Deal With Tailgaters?
With all the gear on we are very limited to communicate with cagers. When one is too close my back I wave my hand as if pushing it back, a few times it works most times doesn't.
I know the best way is to let them go, but sometimes you would do nothing but.
I have at times gone on the shoulder and waved them to pass me as I show them my fist. In any case a biker can't win an argument with a cager, I think, unless at a stop he dismounts and gives the cager the boot, literally, but then we are in road rage territory, which is much like a minefield.
An LCD screen on my back that could display "Keep Away" with an optional added word, "a-hole," or whatever fits, would be nice.
Maybe just a sign "Don't Tailgate" that could come off or on for the commute hours would be fine. But that would up the drag of the bike quite a bit, though in traffic it doesn't matter much.
Comments welcomed.
Thanks

they make mudflaps for trucks. How about a big patch for your jacket?

D cell batteries tossed over the shoulder? (wipe the fingerprints off first!)
I usually accelerate and change lanes if possible. That, or slow down more to piss them off!

When pulling over isn't an option I'll usually ride the brake lightly, just enough to engage brake light, with throttle on.

If someone is following too closely, they are already making bad driving decisions. I don't tax their senses any further by showing brake lights or slowing quickly. I change lanes, filter or lane split.
Be careful taking a shoulder in traffic since there may be disabled cars, debris, or other woes waiting for you.

tailgaters
I once had the idea of putting a large bax on the back of my bike with dynamite label on it, should have worked.

I usually slow down when somebody tails me. Just a little at first, but more if they don't get the point. Sometimes I'll slow down quite a bit and then accelerate to open up a gap (not slamming on the brakes or trying to get them to lock up the brakes - just gently forcing a gap). That usually works; if it doesn't, I try to find a way to get them around me, as I don't want somebody tailing me.
At least where I ride, people are usually tailing because they're not paying attention, and that seems to be the automatic brainless norm around here - so the slowing down and then pulling away usually wakes them from their slumber and causes them to say, "oh, I was tailing". The intentional, obnoxious tailers are a different problem, and it's best to just let them get around you.

is it weird that when someone effs with me that i get behind them, follow them, and when they stop at a light or something i get off the bike and start kicking the crap out of their car?
this one time a guy cut me off bad and almost laid me out on the freeway. i pull up next to him and give him a "what the EFF?!" look. he then flips ME off. like i did something wrong.
so i chased that effer down and tried to beat the crap out of him.
to me, it's karma for them almost killing me. and maybe i make them look out for bikers more. needless to say he didn't get out of his car. he just sat there shaking like a french soldier. he's not so bad ass when he has to get out of the cage...

I guess it's different if you have an open face, I usually mouth "***?!" and with my head turned back towards them for a split second. Most people don't want to F-with somebody on a bike.
Granted I had one guy chase me down Cheshire Bridge Road here in downtown ATL and we really got into it - just make sure they don't get behind you. You're much better off if the dumba$$ in question is in your 12 verses your 6.
I wish I had a helmet cam - this guy was livid, and for what? I never found out.

I do most of what others have said - the slow down speed up thing - sometimes turning around glaring is necessary - I have found that to be effective. Someone even waved apologetically at me once and then backed off.
If I'm lucky we'll come up behind a semi, where they can be ditched via a good overtake.
I never get into any verbals (any more) - that way leads to anger and out of control conditions. Not good.
Like you say - you can't really win on a bike - so do what's safest for you.
