Thumbs down grrrrrr...oil drip already?

so i've noticed a very small oil drip coming from the front of my clutch cover of my thruxton. i don't even have 100 miles on the **** thing yet. a very small drip cooked onto the pipe and i noticed some oil accumulating under the cover just above it. it seems to be very small as the oil level doesn't look any different but i am not happy about this at all. dealer opens at 10:00, i'll be on the phone with them by 10:01.

Probably no problem. The notorious cosmoline--oily covering from the factory--wasn't thoroughly cleaned off. Just wipe off and enjoy.

I agree. Saw the same thing when mine was new too.

My 2003 is leaking in the same place. I replaced the clutch cover gasket last weekend, but I still get a wee bit of oil on my finger when I reach under that area. Less oil, but it's still there, which makes Mr. Mellow slightly less mellow.

It could be the starter-shaft seal (where it passes through into the clutch housing), but when I examine that area on my bike there doesn't appear to be any oil coming from behind the starter. I haven't heard of others having this problem so on yours it's either cosmoline, as others have suggested, or it may just be under-torqued cover bolts. I slowed (but didn't stop) my cover leak by increasing the torque just a wee bit. It's not something I'd recommend, however, as it wouldn't take much to snap one of those puppies off.

so i called the shop and their first reaction was cosmoline. the guy asked if it was clear but i'm not sure since i could only see it on the pipe (after it had been cooked so who knows what color it was originally) and on the black finger of my glove. he suggested cleaning it off thoroughly and keeping a close eye on it. if i was still concerned he said i could bring it in anytime and it would be pretty easy for them to determine the issue. having read mellow's post i think i will check the torque on the cover bolts just in case (plus it gives me a reason to get the torque wrench out again).

Thumbs up Oil/ Cosmoline

I bet these dealers take a handfull of Valiums ea nite for all the calls they get on "cosmoline"! When the bike gets 1-2000 mi on it- then if there is some oily looking stuff comming off the bike, then its time to call the dealer.I freaked when I saw a little puddle behind the jugs in week #1!! My bud had his for 60 days prior & he said he "freaked"
& called the dealer 3 days after purchase. . I was checking posssible causes & was gonna call the dealer till I pinkyed & smelled the stuff. It sure wasnt oil!! Never had a leak EVER!!
Engine is so dry I have to dust it 1x / week! The only oil leak gig I have seen on some bikes is the valve cover. Its a lame bolt set-up there. If it works- it does. I put a chrome valve cover on @ day 1. Dealer did a nice job @ sealing it. I am afraid to do a valve adjustment @ 12000 mi- if I have to? The cover may never be as dry as it has been for 4 yrs? These bikes are a whole different animal than its breatheran! No leaks, good carbs, good elec's, more reliable and so on etc!! A Triumph as- more reliable than a Honda???? No way?? Yes way!!!!!

I had a leak at the front of my clutch cover on my 2002 T100 when it was quite new. It turned out to be a seal on the starter motor and was rectified by the dealer as a warranty issue. No big deal as it never leaked again.
