This reminds me of the argument I used to have with my friend the computer engineer -- is it better for your office PC to turn it off every night before leaving, or to let it run all night every night? After all sorts of back and forth on the issue, we decided that we were making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I live only two miles from work and have no qualms about riding my bike to work. I'm amazed to hear the members of a motorcycle enthusiasts' site advising anyone not to ride!

+1. I only live 3 miles from work and I ride whenever I can. If I have to change the oil a little more often, fine. I like working on my bike.

This was the original question. Scientifically, and well known for many years from research and testing done by major manufacturers, the objective answer is yes, (this is mentioned in many Car Manuals as well) the short trips are harmful to the oil, etc., therefore harmful to the bike unless monitored carefully. More frequent oil changes could easily remedy that situation, but it is better for many reasons to drive for longer periods.

Subjectively, and the opinion of some - go ahead and do it, who cares.

Health minded members suggest bicycling, or maybe jogging. No harm in that either.

It's up to the original poster to decide... right?

In my truck, my commute is 4.5 miles. I've found that when riding my bike the trip in is normally about 9 miles and the ride home is anywhere from 20 to 40 miles. I think something must be wrong with my odometer...
