A group ride this weekend of friends, and co-workers with about 14 riders, with differant purpose bikes, and levels of experiance ended in a bad way. I only want to share, be careful on group rides, and riding with people without alot of experience, and differant riding styles. Sometimes hanging in the back doesn't make you safe, and you can still end of in the mix. Harry was a friend, we'll miss him. Be Smart, Be Careful, it's not my first bad ride, they are not all good. ~T~ http://www.sanluisobispo.com/breakin...ory/58150.html

Sorry it's not a uplifting story, and I too don't like those old lady stories. I won't stop riding, never did before. Managed to pull through all the stupid years. Just something to help remind the new riders to use your head, be smart, when you can, so you can one day, be an old rider. Heading out on the road for a week or so for a long ride, see you when I get back. ~T~

Group rides scare me, and I've never done one, nor had any interest. I do ride with one or two friends occasionally, but that's not really a group ride.
It seems that too much traffic was too close together for this one.

I ride alone, my choice, for my safety, and the safety of others.
And, its a Zen thing, for me...

An awful result to what was intended to be a great time.
I do some group rides. In fact there is one here this coming Saturday. People make mistakes in groups. And they make them riding solo. Group rides that are poorly planned and/or attended by riders who have no intention of following common sense, let alone the rules of the ride, can make group rides more dangerous than riding solo or with only one other bike.
But group rides can be relatively safe. When they aren't, Sue and I drop out and meet them later at the dinner spot. We had to do that last summer when we could not comfortably keep up with the leaders on the twisties.
Alone or in a group we MUST remember to ride our own ride and to never get sucked in to riding ourside our comfort zone to "keep up" with the pack.
My prayers are with those impacted by this event.

*****, one inattentive moment, one slight mistake, and one dead, two severely injured. Not the way a group ride is supposed to go.
99% of the time I ride alone. Just a choice, good or bad it is the choice I made. (Like helmets, I choose to wear one, and I'm OK with whatever choice you make) I've done three group rides. The first two were great!! Over 2,000 bikes at the first, no one got out of line, no mishaps, no accidents. The police presence (for crowd and traffic control) probably helped. The second there were six of us, all about the same skill level, differing styles, but everyone knew how to allow space for each other and there were no close calls. The last had the potential to end like the one linked above. There were 18 riders, four were very skilled four had no business in traffic, the remaining 10 were Ok to pretty good riders. One of the very poor riders decided to ride (HD w/forward controls) with his legs resting on the pegs with his feet well forward of the pegs. A limb in the road (probably fell from a truck) blocked half of both lanes. The guy could not swerve, didn't know how. He paniced put his feet straight down (at 60 mph) and tried to just steer around the limb while pulling the front brake. (How do I know, I was right behind him). All I could do is slow way down and try to swerve without hitting the idiot who, also had his feet on the pavement passed both of us on his way to the ditch. There are a few guys from that group I'd ride with any time any where, but there are two...

Three motorcyclists were killed in Indiana Saturday by an 18 year old driver who went left of center during a poker run. According to today's paper a line of cars had pulled over to gave the bikes more room when the last car pulled into the path of the bikes. I don't normally do poker runs because a lot of them seem to stop at bars and I don't like to drink and ride. Also I would rather know the people I'm riding with.

The big group rides are becoming a traffic hazard. This goes for motorcycles and bicycles. The numbers seem to make them devoid of common courtesy, i.e. going 10 mph below speed limits, running stop signs etc.. just to keep the group together. I avoid following or joining them. Four bikes seems to be the max number for me and they better be able to ride proficiently.

I have been on good group rides and bad group rides. On good rides the route is discussed beforehand, rules are laid out and followed, and people drive courteously.
