Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.

But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York.

The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as...

...Sinko de Mayo.

Thank you for sharing that bit of Central American history. It certainly explains a lot of what has transpired since. I keep trying to incorporate some comment related to lublication, or lack thereof, caused by this shipping disaster, and how it might be affecting the current state of politcal affairs, but am not coming up with anything good.
Best just to join you in a pint or 2 or 3.....................

I dont know if thats anywhere close to being true (I'm a scientist, not a historian) but a friend emailed me that and I posted it. I like the idea of mayonnaise going down with the titanic though. Mayo sucks - mustard is where it's at!

Cinco de Mayo rules though, especially here in Abq. I know for a fact that I'll hear people shooting pistols into the air tonight -- Three Amigo's style. It'll be just like New Years Eve. (Hey Lebanon, eat your heart out!)

Sounds like a reason enought to party to me.

If you want an interesting bit of cinco de Mayo trivia, It is not celebrated in Mexico to any great extent.
No, it is not Mexican Independence Day either.

Good one Sooner_Scott. I relish your sense of humour.

Speaking of the Titanic, a little known tragedy that doesn't get retold enough, is the story of the polar bear that lost his whole family ....

They were on the iceberg that the Titanic hit.

An un-bear-able tale of woe.

Hey Sooner Scott,

What side of town are you on? Did you happen to go on PJ's ride a few weekends ago? I'm out here on the NW side, looking to go riding whenever. Nathan
