I had a few bucks of credit left over with brent so i grabbed some 45 pilots. Mine are the stock 42's. I absolutly hate removing the carb bowls, so before i do i wanted to ask this. has anyone with a setup like mine (see sig for specs) gone to 45's and if so what was the result? I ask because it seems like even after considerable airflow mods that require pretty good size changes in mains an needles, most people seem to stick with the stock pilots. So i'm wondering if it's even worth going to the trouble because as much as i hate removing the bowls, i'd have to do it twice if the 45's don't work out.

daz,
not the same setup but I do have 45's & TBS needles in. Currently using 2 shims. I have K&N's rather than your drilled box & 155 mains rather than your 130's, so maybe that part of it is a wash.
My setup seemed to work good through the winter when I was mostly riding in 40F to 55F weather, since it is now in 80's here, my setup has gone to $hit. I was told in another post I am too rich. Which is what I thought too. My screws are nearly all the way in too.
I am going back to 42's this weekend and intend to keep the TBS needles with however many shims it takes. If it doesn't work out, I'll go back to square one and start out with smaller main jets and go step by step.
I'll let you know if going down to 42's solves my problems

I have a similar setup to yours (although faster because of the all black theme)
airbox - baffle removed, bottom cut out, polaris bell mouths and uni filter.
carbs - 130 mains, 45 pilots, SM needles with 2 shims, screws at 3 turns.
exhaust - sceptre
I think that it starts easier with the 45's and there are no low end or warm up problems. I have about a 1000 miles on this same set up, so far so good.
I previously had 42's and it was not as easy to start when cold.

Mag10,
Mine isn't hard to start when cold, but then it doesn't get very cold here. It DOES however run like **** for the first few miles when it gets "cold" here. It stumbles as tho it's running out of gas, with OR w/o the choke out. Once warm it's a champ, but not when it's cold. However, that problem is totally non-existant except in weather below maybe 50, maybe a bit higher.
But sounds like maybe i should try em based on your bike. Any others?

have 03 speedy, bubs,130, 42, thruxton needles..no shims, uni, drilled air box , runs great and starts easy cold with a little choke. have tried 45 and 48...both too rich even with stock needles. have also tried 132,135, and 138...all seemed too rich for my bike. good luck.

Well, it's 1 and 1. Guess i'll wait and see what else i can find about this before bothering. But your setup sounds just like mine cept the needles. But i tried thruxtons and settled on TBS with 3 shims which works out almost exactly the same as the thruxtons. So our bikes are pretty close.

I run 45 pilots and 145 mains with K&Ns and Triumph short offroads. Great combination. The 42s are anaemic.

I installed 45 pilots and am going to try the 42s again. Starts and runs great cold, makes me think its to rich. When I had the 42s with 3 1/2 turns, it did fine. Now, I can't get rid of decel popping. If I turn out screws, I get airbox pop when I blip throttle. I'm thinking that low end is less affected by breathing mods, probably all I needed from stock was screw adjustments. BTW, running stock America pipes with 3 baffles knocked out each side. Had 2 out for few thousand miles, took out 3rd and it made a big difference.
