everybody thanks for your advice - got me thinking more about just how little i really understand motorcycles. i never really gave a second thought about my cars . SO maybe running high rpms in low gears in the cold morning to heat up to burn off condensation in the motor is bad. AND so now i am heating up better in the drive before i leave BUT i heard leaving the bike in neutral with the engine idling for a longish time is also NOT GOOD. second thing - okay so i have been trying different gearing and now i got to thinking when should i be in 4th gear as i usually putt putt around in 3rd IN places where i drive my car in 4th gear. i know that there is no magic numbers but surely there must be some kinda posted recommendations. kinda thingy like tire pressures or change oil nowish stuff. thanks -

I reckon leaving the bike idle while you put your jacket/gloves/helmet on allows it to warm up and should be fine after 10mins riding. Keeping revs in the midrange should be fine.

These engines are tested at extremes to 100,000 miles so can't see us doing too much harm!!

Don't stress about letting your bike idle for 5- 10 minutes. Read again and again and .... Its nothing to worry about.

As for what revs to ride around on if you stay within 3000 - 5000 when just tooling along that's fine. If you play racer a lot and regularly hit the redline/limiter that's fine but don't cruise at the redline in any gear. Just ride with what revs feel right. For me around town its in the 3000 - 4000 range and on the freeway 4000 - 5000.
