My S4 ran great at Barbers after losing my CA can. I took it to the dealer when I got back and asked them what they thought about the can. They were baffled so I had them put it back on (they could do that for free). Now my engine management light won't go off. Anybody dealt with that?
I'm thinking about taking it off again and hooking up the fuel and return, blocking the other vacuum, like openhelix suggested, but that ***** light.

Can you explain a little differently? Did you take your end can off completely? I take it the bike runs fine. If you run the bike through three heat cycles, the light should go off if there is nothing wrong.

I had the dealer put a new can on. When I brought the bike back home the light would not go off. I didn't ride it because the muffler bracket was broken. I got my new bracket, put it on and decided to go for a short ride to see if the light would go off, but it wouldn't start. I had to push it off. When I hit the starter it just buzzed. It never did that before and it ran fine before I took it to the dealer. Now it also runs kind of rough and the idle is not right.
After running it about 10 miles it still buzzes when I turn it off and try to start it again, like it doesn't have the power to turn it over. The battery reads 12V and drops to 10V when I hit the starter.
I'm going to load it up and take it back to the dealer on Tuesday. I just hope they get it fixed soon. I need something to ride at VIR on the 29th. :brk:

Check your battery terminals.

Mine came out of the factory with no lock washers so the terminals shhok loose. This led to hihg resuistance slowinghte charge rate and reducing the voltage comng out of the battery.

If you measure voltage on the battery terminals you should get 12-13v resting, 13-14.5v engine revved. 12.5v or so minimum with the engine, lights etc. And minimum 9v when starting (as long as the engine spins easily. The voltage is not so important here because when spinning a starter, the power or wattage is as important as the voltage)

I think we're still in need of come clarification.

Sean, you live in North Carolina, but some how received a California model bike and thus had the evaporative emissions canister under your rear fender. You removed it prior to a track day and had some problems described here Previous post

Presumably the Dealer couldn't explain the 'chirping' noise and you opted to replace the canister with a new one.

It seams that the topic has really migrated to the not starting, and rough running which sounds to me like a separate issue, provided the shop didn't screw something up while reattaching the emissions canister. I'd reiterate Will's point that it takes three cycles for the light to go out, if something did go wrong and it seems like you may not have gone through that process, though it also seems like there's something wrong so... back to the shop.Previous post

I took it back to the shop today. I've never had a second of problems with the S4 in the last 1 1/2 years, so I was wondering if some little thing didn't go right in putting the can back on. They checked a small oil leak, so they may have had the tank off.

The tech says he's never seen the code it was giving and it wasn't even in his book. It might just be a bad battery and the rest is coincidence. He says if the battery is weak it can cause some wierd symptoms with the fuel injection.

The emissions can originally just fell off. I guess it dangled for a while cuz you could see where it rubbed my tire, but the only thing holding it on was two zip ties and they don't last forever, The chirping came from the vacuum, but the tech didn't know just how to go about removing the system. And I would have had to pay him to remove it, but he would put it back under warranty. So I sez "Put it back".

I'll find out in a day or two what's going on. As long as it's running good. Like I told him, it's tough at the track without a bike. They'll just run over you! :-D

Well, it all turned out to be coming from a weak battery. That was screwing up the fuel injection and causing the engine light to stay on. And of course it doesn't start to well with a bad batt. :-D
