S4 vacuum lines

Hello all I just picked up a 2006 S4 a few weeks ago. my first triumph!!! I love it. as I was checking the air filter I noticed that I had some lines that run all over and t-ing off in multiple places behind airbox. two of the lines are terminated and capped off with electrical tape. is this normal to see these lines like this or do I need to repair them? I can post pics if the visual would help.

Thanks

Without knowing any info on what emissions model bike you have or seeing a picture, I would say the previous owner probably deleted the factory emissions equipment (charcoal canister and whatnot). Look on this webpage and click on the thumbnail for 'Evaporate Loss Equipment': http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/triumph-motorcycle-speed-four/o/m6897

Does any of that look familiar? If the lines are vacuum lines, you'll want to cap them better than tape; if they have no vacuum they should be good. Is your bike a 'green state' model (i.e. CA)

Ok I looked at the schematic and the two lines are lines 9 and 7. of the schematic which both go to the canister which is removed. it says it is califorina approved. so it is a green state bike but i live in florida. so can I remove all the evap system crap or will it mess with the ecu? if not, is capping the lines going to be ok or would it run better by reinstalling the can?

It will run fine with the canister removed, but you need to get a rubber plug for the vacuum side of the canister, as tape isn't going to cut it.

As for removing any other emissions equipment, I personally wouldn't bother. There are a few different schools of thought as to the emissions equipment which is comprised of the evap. canister and secondary air injection (SAI) (not sure if you have SAI on your bike). If you think about what each piece of equipment does, you will find that they don't affect performance. Again, some will disagree and swear that the emissions equipment causes all sorts of problems, but think about it for a second: 1. When the bike is not running the evap. canister allows expanding gas in the fuel tank to become trapped in it. As soon as the bike is started vacuum forces the gas fumes back into the engine to be burnt--no power loss or performance affect there. 2. (I'm trying not to get mixed up between the 955i system and TT600's on this one!) When the exhaust ports open they suck a reed flap open located in the exhaust runner of the head just before the header. This then sucks in air from the airbox and this fresh oxygen is mixed with the rich fuel mixture in the header. This allows the excess fuel to burn more so than it would without the added oxygen. Once again, this has no affect on performance from what I know about the system on a bike and on cars. So after this long explanation I will state my ‘green opinion’: If we can have powerful machines and still come up with new emissions tools to help save our children, grandchildren, and all other things on earth from being eaten by cancer or simply cooked but at the same time not hurt the machine’s performance, why not use the emissions equipment?

thank you bomb factory. I capped the lines again, this time a little more proper.
thanks for the great explanation of the system. saved me some heartache of ripping everything out.
