Tapping sound
Hi guys. I have just brought a TT600 and its got a tapping sound, like 2 bits of metal tapping every 0.5 seconds.. Is this normal? Someone told me it is probably just the fuel injectors, but I would like to be completly sure. The tapping sound comes from the left side of the bike, just under the tank it seems.

Any help would be appreciated

probably the usual TT rattle. They are kinda noisy, especially w/no helmet on.

when was the last time the valves were adjusted?

EFI sound is generally a light ticking noise...that is normal...anything beyond that isn't normal.

I cant find anything in the bikes paperwork to suggest that the valves have been ajusted. Its done 15,000 miles and has gone through quite a few services.

When the injectors are clean they tend to be pretty noisy. If it is a quick ticking (almost a buzzing) sound it is normal. As for your valves and adjustment, the modern Triumph engines rarely need valve adjustment under 24,000 miles--although checking at 12K is a good practice and recommended. With overhead cam engines the valve clearance usually does not become greater (i.e. cam follower, cam lob, valve stem wearing) but in fact become tighter as the valve seat wears forcing the valve to run tighter against the cam follower. The cam follower, cam, and valve stem can wear before this happens, causing a valve noise, but you will usually see the seats wear first which is actually more dangerous to the engine (to a degree). This will cause valves to burn. You could always ride by a dealership or a mechanic that knows modern Triumphs and have them listen to the engine.

Superb reply. thats for the info bombfactory When you say prity noisy.. are they as loud as someone tapping a computer mouse prity hard... And should the tapping speed up when the bike revs, as mine does. Unfortunetly I haven't the cash to bring it to a mechanic or triumph dealer, as my moneys just been swallowed up by my NSR....

Hazza, I own three different Triumphs (two 600cc and one 955cc) and they all make injector noise. As for it being as loud as tapping hard on a mouse key (laughing as I try this) I would say that is a reasonable noise frequency so long as your finger is not smashing down on it. The sound will quicken with the increase in engine RPM's, as the injectors increase their opening/closing speed, and will eventually become another instrument in the beautiful symphony that the Triumph engine produces. You might call around for a mechanic/dealership that will be kind enough to at least listen to your bike before you have to pay them for anything. It would be very shady for a business to charge you to listen to a bike for 10 seconds just because you don't have the experience with it to tell what a normal or odd sound is.

One trick you can do to see if the noise is due to exhaust getting past the valves (caused by the above described worn valve seats which is very unlikely with your bike’s miles) is to take a piece of letter paper and hold it up to the exhaust pipe outlet as the engine is running. Hold it tight up against the pipe to block of the air flow and then let go of the paper. If it sticks to the pipe and bends in and out, you have warn exhaust valve seats. (This is caused by excess air sucking back in as the piston moves down in the cylinder.) Another thing to do is to listen to the sound as you continue to ride, and if it begins to get louder with the more miles you log you might consider having the valves clearance checked. As I said before, it would probably be a good idea to do so if you have no paperwork saying it has been. On that note, a Triumph dealership might have your bike’s VIN in their computer, assuming all maintenance was done at a dealership, and they could tell you what has been done. Definitely not, but thanks. A 4th grader who is enrolled and getting an 'A' in a college calculus class is a genius; I myself just drink a lot of Guinness (does that could though? ). I've had an intensive life around mechanics--tricks of the trade and slave labor for a father.

Well you always seem to have an solution to just about every issue. I got an "A" in college calculus last semester and I still don't have a clue as to what is being talked about on the forum some times lol. Even though I'm more surrounded by the Japanese teenage motorcycle scene here at school, it's nice to know I can result to some Triumph enthusiasts here who know what's wrong with my bike and how to fix it because I don't. I can't tell you how many kids have come up to me at school and asked "what kind of bike is that" as it's got all the factory decals on it staring these Japanese mind-centered kids in the face. Anyways, I love Guinness too! Cheers.
