buying a D600 - few questions

Hi All,

I'm new to the site and D600 scene but have recently placed a deposit down on a used 2004 D600... yellow may i add

bike info; April 2004 '04 D600, 2500 miles, totally standard (as far as i know), buying from a triumph dealer

i just had a couple of quick questions that i hoped you could help me with;

engine/casing colour... i noticed the engine had black casing covers over some parts but the main engine was silver/grey, is this normal?

The exhaust was a standard D600 unit but in black, i thought the D600 had silver and later D650 had black... the sale block said triumph put whatever they had to hand from the parts bin... sometimes they were silver and some black.. is he right.. or has the can been changed for some reason?

there are a couple of marks on the bike but not many, as you'd aspect from a 2500 mile bike, theres a small crack on the seat cowl (may replace), and 5p sizrd dink on the rear fairing behind the seat cowl (not too bad), but the main one is on the tank... again its about the size of a 5p if that, and both dinks have been 'touched up' and dont look out of place.. may question is tank damage... how much would a repair cost... i understand the tanks are plastic.. is this right?

my only other concern is the keys.. the sales chap said the previous owner (original buyer, 1owner) broke the key in the barrel.. its had a new one fitted, no reciept, so the bike has 1 key for the new barrel and 1 old key for the tank and rear seat. he dropped £100 off the asking price because of this and offered me 2 new triumph keys to have cut... i didnt see this as mcuh of a problem, other than why did the new barrell only have 1 key with it? any thoughts out there?

was up for £3499, becasue of keys, got it for £3400... triumph dealer... ok price? i know i could shop around a little and save the odd £400 but paying via credit card (0% ) so didnt have cash...

thanks for taking the time to read/post.... ady

some extra info (from another post)

I'm no expert but took some time looking around the bike and could find nothing else wrong, engine covers, footpeg, bar ends etc all looked fine, no damage or marks. The dinks i've described are very small, smaller than a 5p and have no scratches next to them, so more like small impact damage than a scrape... and they are not on the side of the tank/fairing both are on the top... well away from things

the barrel and key issue did make me think a minute but the hpi the dealer showed me was all clear and i doubt a triumph main dealer would sell a lemon... i can understand the key breaking in the barrell, but just unsure about the amount of keys with the new one, why didnt it have 2.. was it sourced from the breaker?

test ride seemed fine too... down the road, 30/40mph, hands off the bars, nice and straight, all seemed well. brakes/gear change/road manners all good

the deposit was £200, and i doubt refundable but i could still walk away.... with a ouch in my pocket of course!

Beats me why the key would be broken off like that or why there is only one. Like you note, maybe the barrel came from a breaker's yard. It wouldn't bother me too much to need two keys, but it is better if they all match. Triumph key blanks are expensive for what they are, so getting the dealer to provide spares is a good idea.

I can't address the various colors you found on the engine or the black exhaust can. It isn't uncommon to swap the can for one you like better, so maybe that's what happened. It is common for the engine case and block to be a different color from the stator and clutch covers. Is that what you mean when you mention the different colors?
