Might be buying a Speed 4, opinions?

So, I had a bike that recently got stolen and I've been looking at a temporary replacement. I came across a 2002 Speed 4. The wants $3500 for it but I talked him into taking $3000. It's got about 12k miles on it. It sounds great. No valve chatter, squeaks, or other annoying noises. No oil leaks that I can see. The transmission shifts smoothly. It does have a little corrosion around the Two Bros exhaust and the paint is starting to chip in a few places. The clutch still feels nice and tight. The throttle does stick a little bit but is easy to roll back forward and hardly notice it.

When I took a look at it today the check engine light came on but we couldn't figure out what the reason was. The sale kind of hinges on the reason for the check engine light coming on.

With all this in mind, do you think it's a good deal? I've never dealt with Triumphs before and I no nothing about them. Is there anything I need to look for. Is there a reason I should avoid it?

Any info in either direction would be great. If anyone has an idea on what to look for to see what the check engine light's for, that'd be great too.

Thanks.

no reason to avoid it.

do ya have a local dealer? if so take the bike by there and have them run the code for ya. in truth any dealer can do it but a triumph dealer would be best.

if the bike looks well maintained and the light check out then i would say its a good deal. check nada motorcycle values to make sure that you are getting a good price.

If the previous owner had the battery disconnected for any length of time, it will make the light go on until the bike has been through three heat cycles. It is worth asking about. If he warms it up and lets it cool three times, the light should go off if there's no problem.

Yeah, it might be worth running by the dealership. Right now I live in England so they're not too hard to find around here.

The guy that has it now did tell me he just replaced the battery. I don't think he's had it out since he put the new one in. It sounds like he got the new battery just to sell the bike. After he payed what worked out to be about $117 he found out it was a fuse and the original battery was fine.

Hey, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Oh, is there a way to check a code on the bike yourself? Like in a car with an OBD I system by jumpering two ports? Or will it be more like and OBD II that you have to have a scanner to see what the problem is?
