Scrubbing new tires

I just got told this by a local rider...though it would be good. Anyone have any pros/cons?

Take the tires new and use an orbital sander and 400grit sand paper to remove the shiny outer color which eliminates the typical break in time, at least minimizes it greatly.

I was told that putting them through a few heat cycles for the first 100 miles is best. Not sure if I would go the sandpaper route. Im curious to hear what other people think.

On one of my RC51 forums someone posted a youtube how-to using a disc sander to "Get rid of your chicken strips so you won't be embarrassed at bike night". It was completely serious, and funny in a pathetic sort of way... I would imagine you're asking for a more practical reason though

I doubt it would do any harm, but I am not sure what good it would do. You are trying to get the form release compound off the tires more than anything else.

Just got off the phone with him to clarify.

He said he does it to shorten his break in cycling time. He says the sanding removes the release compound as well as 100 miles of careful riding and because you sand the entire tire it makes it the safest method as the entire surface is pre-scrubbed of the mold release goop as you remove a layer of it from the entire tire.

I find it funny and odd, but I may actually try it this set of new tires.

No need

I just do about a 50km run up my local twisty mountain road and mine are scrubbed in edge to edge front and rear. But I live in warm climate and the distance traveled to remove the slippery stuiff depends on how and where you ride.

There is no set distance to clean the slop off your tyres.

As Will says it is just the release agent you need to scrub off. Some brands have more of this than others.

Dunlop, Metzeler usually have quite a lot of it on, Michelin has very little usually, Bridgetsone and Avon about average. haven't had Conti's or Pirellis for a while so don't remember.

I have heard that done for "rejuvinating" old tires, but I have no personal experience with it. It can't hurt.

With new tires, heat cycles help to dissipate the mold release agents. For street tires, take it easy for the first 50 miles or so & then progressively run them more aggressively.
