Thumbs up New Guy, 1st post... Need some help!

hey folks... been lurking for a while now but finally got some questions to ask!

my buddy just purchased an '05 kawi r6, he's been riding for about 3 years now and recently got me into it... he taught me on his '01 tt600 which was his first bike... about a month ago he laid it down pretty bad, he's ok fortunately but the bike isn't... he made a deal with me since he purchased his new kawi that if I wanted to pay to get the tt running I could have it... here are some pics of the bike:

surprisingly it's not that bad... I need a new tank because 2 of the valves underneath are broken off, new throttle, new bolt kit, new battery, new right side brake lever, new tail, and new seat... the fairings r trashed but I'm not worried about them right now the exhaust is brand new and needs remapping, I want to get it back on the road before I start sinking money into to get it looking sharp again, I was actually thinking the s4 look would be sweet when I'm swapping out fairings and things... any replies would be great, any links for replacement parts would be great also... thanks - Zac

1. You don't need a new tank, just the fittings.

2. Like you say, the bodywork can wait.

3. Make sure the subframe and fairing stay are straight. Both are pretty easy to bend in a crash, although it isn't a big deal if they are bent a little.

4. Daytona 600 and 650 pegs and brackets will also work, as will S4 parts.

5. The levers don't look broken, and the throttle doesn't look like it needs to be replaced. Are you thinking about rash or function? You can actually break the clip-on bar clear off without needing to replace the throttle itself when you put it back together again.

The fairings you still have look like they can be repaired. ABS cement will glue any cracks back together, then body filler, sanding and paint will get you back to looking pretty good without buying all new parts. Look at Sharkskinz for a tail section. It would be race plastic, so you would have to cut out for the taillight and paint it, but it would be a whole lot less expensive than OEM plastic.

more questions...

first of all thanks for the reply...

well if i don't need a new tank where would i get the fittings? and how would those be put back on? welder?

i never even thought to repair the fairings so i will definitely be looking into that!

there are no dealerships close to me and i'm trying not to spend dealer prices to get this back on the road...

as far as the footpegs go i've seen tons of stuff on this forum for that but al i need is a cut and dry place to get aftermarket pegs...

the only reason i thought the throttle wasn't good was because it has lost the springy-ness to it, when you get on the throttle it doesn't spring back to its original place and its very gritty not smooth at all... if i did want to replace it all together would it be an arm and a leg? i'm just trying to put a price list together for necessities, i want to get riding again before i start actually putting money into it like i want to...

the tail might have to wait, i've seen some one ebay so i might just zip tie the license plate holder to the back of the bike for now...

i'm most concerned about the gas tank, that seems like it'll be the biggest chunk of change right now and i really just want to get that fixed first!

the frame is not bent at all he was only going about 15-20 mph when he laid it down so it was low impact...

don't think the frame cannot be bent because it was only at 20mph, you'd be surprised how much damage such a fall could do.

i would strip the fairing and take a good close look. new tank would set you back around 800 euro's.

you could think about a s4 conversion. But anyway, i must say. the s4 (and i think the tt600) are pretty sturdy bikes. You can dish out alot at them and they can take a pounding.

Buy the eBay tank if you like, but make sure it comes with a good fuel pump. The fittings you are talking about on the bottom of the tank plug into the pump. That is what you are talking about, right?

Also, take apart the throttle assembly, clean it well, and lube the inside of the throttle tube before you put it back together. Then check the other end of the throttle cable for grit, rocks, who knows what. It it on the left side of the throttle body assembly and is very easy to find with the tank off.

I would be very surprised if the frame is bent. TT600s are plenty stout. I got knocked down on the freeway at speed and the bike was repairable without major surgery. If anything, it took less damage than yours! I have a hard time understanding how a 20 mph getoff would rash up both sides unless the bike caught and flipped over.

thanks for all your input will i really appreciate it, i knew i could come here and find the answers i needed...

yes the bike did catch and flip over, it looked a lot worse than it was...

what is the part called under the tank so i can start searching for it... also will fairings for an s4 bolt right on to the tt?

with frame sliders could i ride the bike naked while im repairing the fairings?

the throttle assembly seems like an easy fix with the cleaning you suggested, what is the part called that was broken off?

the license plate part of the bike i think will zip tie to the frame or seat while things are being repaired...

can u buy replacement fuel lines as well in case those need to be replaced?

i cant wait to get this bike looking like some of the beauties on this site!

sorry for so many questions, this new world of motorcycles is consuming me i've caught the bug...

800 euro is a new tank. i doubt you would get a new ank for $300

anyway. try to inventarise the stuff you need and buy it in one go. Nothing more annoying than not having the parts you need during a rebuild

Since I don't know exactly what fittings are broken, I can't tell you what their names are. And, it has been over two years since I owned a TT600, so I hope somebody with more current knowledge can set me straight when I wander off the truth.

I am guessing you have broken quick disconnect fittings where the fuel lines enter the tank, but your descriptions confuse me just a little. If you take off the tank and look at the bottom, there is a round object bolted up to the bottom, and it is about four inches or so in diameter, maybe a little bigger. That's the fuel pump. The fittings that break off are a red one and a white one. The fuel lines have a corresponding fitting. You can get replacements for both from Colder Industries, but I don't have the part number. Or, you can check with Team Triumph in Wisconsin for their metal replacement fittings. I doubt you have to replace all that much as long as you can get the broken parts out of the fuel pump. Take everything apart and you will have an easier time with it. I can't help much more with the job, since I was one of the lucky few who never broke a fitting in spite of having the tank on and off a lot.

You mention a broken throttle part, but I don't understand what is broken. From your description, it sounds more like a bent part somewhere or dirt in the assembly. If the grip is damaged, it isn't a huge deal. If something else is damaged, it isn't a big deal either. If you end up replacing the throttle cable (or the clutch cable for that matter), make sure you reroute them exactly as they were before. If the throttle cable and clutch cable switch places where they go around the steering head, you will have some exciting throttle behavior at full lock.

No, S4 fairings don't bolt right up. The whole fairing stay is different, the front end wiring is a bit different , and an S4 has the coolant overflow bottle under the seat somewhere instead of hanging off the side of the radiator. You can certainly run the bike with no fairing lowers, but you won't have front turn signals. You can run it with no plastic at all if you want, but you will have to take off the ram air tubes since they will flop around without a front fairing to stabilize them.

I hope this helps.

Is it the quick disconnect fittings on this? (items 17 & 18 on "Fuel Pump & Filter")

The rest of the diagrams should help you be able to identify some of the other stuff you may need.

Hope this helps.
