Engine Life expectancy

Hi,

I have a Jan 2001 TT600 with 16100 miles on it, it has been regularly serviced and is just used for normal riding (commuting, occasional thrash round the lanes etc.), it runs fine and doesn't use any oil. I was just wondering what sort of mileage people were getting up to before needing major rebuilds, engine blow-ups etc., if anyone has got that far.

Cheers

That really depends on factors of the engine's early life. Are you the first owner and have all the 16k on the bike been aquired by sensible riding? My friend's TT clocked up to 33,000 before the counter shaft bearing went bad. but he also did 2 cross country trips with the **** thing. I know a few other people on this forum had TT's last to the 40k's.
Unfortunatley, no bike is perfect, and random mechanical failures happen. My bike was serviced by an idiot with its previous owner, and i payed the price, and a new engine to boot. I suppose the best thing you can do is make sure you trust the work of your mechanic or service station. If you trust your own handy skills, then do your own maintanence. i only send my bike in for valve jobs and tire replacements, and anything im not 100% on. Downside, my bike sits around alot while i study for the new procedure, and save money for new tools and parts. better sitting in my living room waiting then in some random garage though.
all i know is my bike's second engine has 15k on it, and shows no sign of slowing down!

my 06 s4 has 16k miles on it haha so i hope it will last a while.
apparently no one wants to buy a "high mileage" bike like that

Hey, mine lasted 45K miles before I blew it up, even with the 1500 extra rpms.

Thanks - looks like I should be OK for a little longer yet then.

Also I know what BBDGriptonia means about service stations you can trust, I have had a few small jobs done and each time I have found loose nuts and bolts afterwards. I have now learned that where possible do it yourself and if it is done by a mechanic check over everything with a spanner (wrench) when you get it back.

All I need now is some decent weather to put a few more miles on it - it is trying to snow here in the UK.

Happy Easter

In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised to see a TT600 or any other Triumph four go 100K miles with no issues if it doesn't get flogged. My bike lived outside and got run very hard at times, got hit several times, did long distances, had frankenstein mapping experiments done on it, and had an extra 1500 rpm added to the fuel cutoff engine speed. It should have blown up a whole lot sooner than it did! I have done none of those things to the Daytona 675. I maybe kinda dumb sometimes, but not completely incapable of learning.
