where to get a tire?

Where do you get your tires from? I am in need of a new tire and want to order on of the net to try and get a better deal. I can take the tire off myself and take it to the place and have them put it on. Does anyone recommend a place and a tire?

Dennis Kirk will match the price of anything you find anywhere else (+shipping). This might not sound like a great deal, but it puts you well over the $100 start for free shipping on other merchandise. That way if you need to order any other little bits that aren't pricey, you're not getting hit with the shipping. Plus they do a good amount of volume so you'll hopefully get fresher stuff.

Just a word of warning - a lot of local shops will give you a hard time when you ask them to install a tire that you purchased elsewhere (online). By buying online, they didn't get the margin on the tire, so they punish you for that by charging extra for the installation or putting you at the back of the line.

I'm not saying you should buy local if you don't want to, but make sure you have installation worked out before you order.

I thought I would agree with rustbucket and asked my local Triumph shop...what a joke.

They upcharged the tires I priced online at about 40% higher (I expected that). That did include valve stems and balancing I'm told.

Then they want a minimum of 3 hours labor to replace the tires at a whopping $89 per hour.

I was told a final price for Avon Storm AV55/56 to be about $600. I will not be using their service or shall I call it highway robbery.

I completely understand business so I found a local guy who I plan to price it through, he said he uses the normal book MSRP as the base, no additional labor needed whether I brought the bike or just the wheels.

I recently made the mistake of getting tires through my local dealer. I've had trouble with them before, so I was exceedingly clear that I wanted a fair deal and all charges known up front.

They gave me a fair price up front and told me there would be no difference in price between bringing in the wheels or the whole bike, so I brought it down, came back to pick it up, and funny thing, I was charged for 2 hours of labor at $85/hr for the installation.

For reference. That dealer is Libby's in New Haven, CT and I would reccomend that no one ever patronize them unless they're comfortable with their wallet, bike and sanity being molested.

On the bike Id expect to pay $75-$100 for install on tires you bring in.

I usually get a package deal from TireExpress for about $230. So for a set of tires I wouldn't pay more than $350 Installed.

I found a local guy who will mount and balance for $25 per tire. Pretty good deal, especially when you consider the cost savings over the dealership. (off the bike)

Team Triumph (in Wisconsin) mounted my last set for $20 each, but that was with the help of an employee who happened to be at the racetrack that day too. (also off the bike)

Those were the supersweet "free front tire" deal from Pirelli late last year. Great tires BTW.

The local (as in 100 miles away) Honda dealer will put new tires on at 2 different rates - $15 per each on the bike $7 per each off. Prices include balancing. I've taken 3 bikes in for new tires in the last 6 months, all tires ordered from the Internet. Shopping around helps. The first dealership I contacted (Kawasucki) wanted $110 on the bike and $70 off.
