What is "overrun"?
Popping/backfiring is mostly caused by air entering the exhaust and further fueling the combustion process. It's odd that way because too lean a mixture can cause backfires too. Backfires are essentially explosions in the pipe, which can and do bend valves.
The likely culprit is the exhaust donuts at the head, but if your can is loose, it can suck some air in there and pop a little. But that is pretty far back, so it'd have to be pretty loose.
