How do you take some of the preload out of the rear shock? Does it require a special tool?

You'll need a spanner wrench - it's a sort of a hook shaped thing that lets you turn the shock collar and lock nut...

It's pretty straightforward - if you take a look at the shock, you'll see that part of the body is threaded. There are two notched collars on the threads. One is the lockring, and the other actually adjusts the preload. To start, loosen the lockring. By turning the collar the spring rests on so it moves up, you'll get less preload.

It will help a great deal to unweight the swingarm first - have a trusted friend tip the bike up on to the front wheel and the kickstand - this makes it much easier to loosen the lock ring.

If you don't have the right kind of spanner, you can use a long screwdriver and a hammer. Put the blade of the screwdriver on one of the ears of the lock nut and tap on it. You don't want to give it a big whack. Use the same very gentle kind of tapping to set the preload where you want it, and then reverse the procedure to set the jamb nut.

Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon.

I picked mine up at a local Cycle Gear. I'd imagine any of the online sellers would have one. It's not a bike specific tool, so it's pretty easy to find
